Do cats ever need to be put in sweaters? As in, if you live in a cold climate and have an indoor/outdoor cat, is there ever a point at which your cat requires extra warm clothing?
posted by meese at 7:10 AM on December 23, 2010 [2 favorites]

I imagined #20 as the cat saying "As you may have guessed...I have summoned you here to discuss a matter of utmost importance; ignore the candle!...look at me..."

#20 brought me up short too. It was one of those pictures where one constructs an entire narrative around it, because there are so many unanswered questions, including:

Why is that candle floating in a plate of beans? I must overthink it!
posted by angrycat at 7:19 AM on December 23, 2010 [1 favorite]

#20 is definitely looking to murder whoever set him up in that sweater in front of that....swill...with the candle stuck in it.

Also, #8 would like his/her dignity back, please.

But the rest, so far, look surprisingly content!

And hey, cats. Cats for Christmas is a very good thing.

Are those beans? I thought they looked like capers. Although really, that doesn't change anything.

I can't believe I never thought of putting one of our cats in a sweater and taking a picture of it. Damn self-preservation instinct kicking in again.

Admit it, who here zoomed in on the picture with a pile of books so you could read the titles?

"109 Very unhappy cats in sweaters" is a more precise title.

On review:

#27 Ahem. Please to get a bigger sweater now.

Shhh. #33 is fast asleep, cuddled up in his blanky.

#34 Where is my deerstalker cap, Watson?

#58 Squee!

#67 is deflated by the sheer weight of those pom poms.
posted by misha at 7:29 AM on December 23, 2010

Oh Greg Nog, please please tell me you've found a kitty-sized eyepatch for Swarthy Pete. That would be the greatest thing in the history of things.

Sure, it looks cute, but a week later they'll piss in your iPod for revenge. You'll never make the connection, blaming Steve Jobs and his quest for world domination, but Tabby will sit there and watch you with that bored look knowing you'll never make the connection, confirming humans are as dumb as she's always thought.

Most people who knit cat sweaters seem not to even consider what colors might look good with their cats' coats. That's the greatest tragedy... there are a few cats here, wearing well-coordinated outfits, who look like they're ok with the costumery, because they know they're looking good. Mr. 57 is not among their number.

I don't know, I'm as anti-cats-in-clothing as they come, and I have to admit some of those guys seem to be enjoying themselves.

At least they provided links to the sources this time. Of course, a bunch of the sources are just the same kind of image-ganking sites that steal other people's photos for ad revenue. Man, I hate Buzzfeed so much.

Anyway, yes, very cute. Yay cats.

Every single one of these cats is despising its owner for this humiliation. Once the sweater is off, the cat will despise its owner for the humiliation of dry cat food, the humiliation of the litter box, the humiliation of leaving things about that can easily be topped and cause mortifying lapses in the cat's usual unfrightened state, and finally, the ultimately indignity of strokes and scratches to the fur, which, pleasant though they may feel, is an unconscionable breach of intimacy.

It's amazing what you can do with photoshop.

By that I mean removing all traces of blood from the photos.

For a panicky moment I wondered if this was going to be a link to my twitter pictures, but then I realized that would be more accurately titled "four cats being dressed up by an asshole"

Because really, it's just a conduit to post photos of me humiliating my pets and bitching about the weather.

Man it would be awkward if you went to a new years party and you where wearing the same sweater as the cat.

One of you would have to change, and I don't think it would be the cat.

My cat in a sweater. It was goofy, took a couple hours to knit and used up the scraps from my slippers. She really don't fuss over it, but she doesn't fuss over much. She does hate my camera, though. The pattern can be found here.
posted by MaritaCov at 11:58 AM on December 23, 2010

You know how cats don't like to move when clothed? We use that against them. The young cat gets to wear her Christmas sweater when we don't want her bothering the elderly blind kitty.

anybody know the etymology of kitteh? Every time I see it, I hear it being said in Cartman's voice. Not complaining, mind you.

There are some good images in your Ravelry link, MaritaCov.

This one shows the cat standing up, wch the 109 mostly aren't.

This one looks like it has long sleeves.

Bumblebee cat.

Another bee.

Rolled neck.

Oh for more time ...

So, uh, I did this once. You can, of course, only do it the one time because then they have no idea what you're doing but after that, they are on to your stupid, humiliating game. But it's worth it. It's HILARIOUS. It was actually harder to measure him for the custom-knit sweater than to get it on him. And then, since that was such an achievement, it went out as my LOLChristmas card that year. Somehow, I still have friends and both eyeballs.
