MDMAfilms, a new drug-centered film venture from hated (hipster?) writer Tao Lin

MDMAfilms is a new film venture from Tao Lin and Megan Boyle. As you probably know Tao Lin is a controversial writer that, at 27, a lot of people already hate and are tired of hearing about. His last book made a New York Times reviewer want to kill himself. A few months ago he started a film company with Megan Boyle whose articles about personal relationships always go viral. Here's an interview with them about the company where they seem, honestly, bored with the company already. But someone attended their first public screening and transcribed the Q&A and it's hilarious and weird and I was surprised to feel excited about the entire venture. So far they have reported on Harry Potter 7 while in New Orleans on Xanax, an art gallery event in Manhattan while on MDMA, and a documentary-type-thing on God knows what while in Taiwan at a McDonald's. This is the trailer for their first feature film which seems like an extreme indie movie. There's also a documentary about "it"-girl Bebe Zeva and a feature film called Heroin. What do people think? Is this another of Lin's gimmicks? Is this Warholian? Should he stick to writing?

I'm personally very interested in what people think about this. I searched for a discussion and didn't find one and got an account and was eager to post. Hopefully there will be some interesting discussion.

Haven't used this in a bit, but it's totally, absolutely appropriate for this travesty:

If Tao Lin and Megan Boyle have a child together, 2012 might arrive a year early.

Last time I watched a bunch of kids rolling, it was in 3D and I was getting paid.
I hope this would be more exciting than working security at a rave, but can't imagine how.

It's like a post about Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton but for the smart, hip people, who aren't as smart nor hip as they think they are. You've thrown shit at a wall and invited everyone to sit down and watch to see if it sticks.
That's what I think.

"I finished Tao Lin's new book", I said.
"How was it?", she asked.
"I don't know", he replied.

Note, it's generally bad form to have this sort of leading in the post. It comes off as editorializing and generally met with negative reactions. Either a post is interesting to the community or it isn't. Trying to push or encourage discuss is heavily frowned upon.

I'm new here for posting and I emulated the post on Clancy Martin because I thought that was well received and engendered some interesting discussion. Sorry if the post had too much editorializing, I'm still learning! Anyway, I didn't expect such a harsh response. People just really do hate Lin I guess.

Okay word nerd alert."Rolling" as slang for "Being on MDMA" is a long standing word, right? Cause I somehow totally missed it until I heard it in Black Swan a few weeks ago and went "wait what? Rolling? That's ecstasy right? Oh god when did I get old?"

I enjoyed this post a lot, both for making me aware of Megan Boyle's work, which I really like, and for the transcript, which was hilarious.

Can we talk about Tao Lin--I read a lot of experimental, memorish, and deeply personal fiction, and much of it is small market. I like Dennis Cooper, for example. One of my favourite novels of the last few month's was Joey Comeu's Bible Camp Bloodbath. I still think JT Leroy was a pretty fantastic prose stylist. I also trust pretty intensely the recommendations of my local indie book seller--they rarely steer me wrong. So I read Shoplifting at American Apparel. I just do not see the appeal. Does anyone here like the work?
(Also, frankly, this is a good post, and should stay.)

I read the transcript. I wanted to slap the self-satisfied, self-indulgent pair of wankers right into next week.
And I *like* drugs.

No way, man, you watched Harry Potter 7 on Xanax? Dude that's so awesome, you're a real psychonaut.
First of all, half the parents who drove their kids to see that movie were on Xanax, so it's not like you were the only one. Statistically speaking, 20% of the kids in that theater were probably on ritalin or adderall, so you're hardly breaking new ground in the realm of pharmacologically mediated experience.
You know what you should do for your next project? Watch Harry Potter 7 Part 2 while you undergo electro-convulsive therapy. I'll man the controls.
