[pedantry] I think you mean "tonic-clonic-like cello playing" or "grand-mal-esque cello playing." [/pedantry]

Myself, I have epilepsy and when I have a seizure, it looks like I fell asleep. If I did so while playing the cello... it wouldn't be hot, unless you're turned on by sleeping people playing the cello.

Nice! It is a bitch-and-a-half (perhaps as many as two bitches) to play double stops up that high.

Also, surprisingly, black cellos look a bit Branson-ish, more country than rock-n-roll.

Really?

My first impulse was to say, "Yeah, tell that to Jimi kiddo."

But the more I thought about it, the more the instrument used is kind of academic.

It's what the musician pouts into it, not what it's being poured into. Like Pete Townshend said, "Its the singer not the song, that makes it really move along."
posted by Relay at 2:05 PM on January 22, 2011

Awesome, although I found the disappearing/reappearing busted hairs towards the end distracting and a little disappointing - makes me wonder if they're really THAT good at hitting the thumb-position double-stops out of nowhere.

That being said, holy fucking catfish. Those double-stops. I may never play again.

Uh, you're talking about this scene? Not... really the association that I would have made. (I'm pretty sure that the cellos are carbon-fiber models; you can see the finish in close-ups and I've seen other instruments made from carbon fiber, like guitars.)

Also, between their good looks and unabashed hamming-up, I imagined the two men as Matt Dillon and Judd Nelson, circa mid-eighties.

That was lovely, thanks. Although I was a little bit taken out of the loveliness by the strange shred of a subplot of the girl at the bar and the cellists...fighting? Over her? Buh? If you're going to put a story into a music video, put it there, don't just drop a couple of threads and then show the band for the other 99% of it.

HuronBob, look into Apocalyptica. (And possibly Rasputina, but I think they're rather an aquired taste.)

I just want to be clear here: I thought this was awesome.

When I woke up this morning I had no idea there were "rockstar" cellists. Or maybe not. Maybe these guys are the Nickelback of the cello world. Famous but easily dismissed as douchey.

But the shiny black cellos, the screeching strings, the stern looks... I saw a million stories float between those guys when they were playing. The competitive world of celloing. Who knew? On one end you have your benign but safely uncomfortable Best of Show's, and on the other end you have a mindfuck psychodrama (which is were I was at with my original comment.)

Thanks for the post.

I want to like it.

Thing is, the emphasis on the "4-and" of the second bar of the main riff is what totally drives the entire rhythm of that song, and they've left out either the "four" or the "-and" pretty much every time. As a result, the rendition feels weak and incomplete.

ThatCanadianGirl, a double stop is when you play notes on two strings at the same time.

My best friend played cello in orchestra from 3rd grade until we graduated, and spent a significant amount of time bemoaning the total lack of sexy potential from cellos (violas, on the other hand ... sexiest instrument ever. Just ask Urban Dictionary?). I just sent this to her and she thinks it could be a great cello recruiting tool.

As a lover of classical, it hurts me that, despite 400+ years of amazing music by some of the greatest musical intellects the world has produced, it takes Michael Jackson or Metallica to get anyone to care about phenomenal up-and-coming instrumentalists.

On the other hand, it's nice to see that Jensen Ackles is still getting work now that Supernatural is drawing to a close.

coolguymichael: "... it hurts me that, despite 400+ years of amazing music by some of the greatest musical intellects the world has produced, it takes Michael Jackson or Metallica to get anyone to care ..."

When success is measured by purchasing in the marketplace, nuance is eliminated. The invisible hand likes the simple, predictable and immediate, and hates thought, ambiguity and change. The only chance art music has in the marketplace is to be a signifier of status or sophisticated taste, but pop music recreated with the instruments and posturing of art music easily takes its place.

This is an unfixable market failure, public or aristocratic funding of art music is the only way to make art music viable.

Even ten years ago, the furthest that video would've gotten would've been the guys' own living rooms.
