Resistor - Keep it to Yourself
I love how poppy and upbeat this is.

Brand New Ukelelelele [sic.]: A song for Bondcliff
Agreed that more songs should end with Framingham. That was my favorite part.

post-quake Japan report
Thanks for posting, flapjax. Your voice sounds like home.

Awesome. I love me some horns.

Get out!
This made my boyfriend laugh, and he doesn't even know the backstory.

Now he does, and this was his response.

She's Got You
Yeah, this is one of our earlier run throughs; the later ones were tighter, and didn't have as many screwups, but they also had a lot of talking over them.

I Need You
Okay. Keep in mind that I know basically nothing about recording equipment. (But I'm willing to learn! Teach me, cortex hocam.*)

We're currently using one of those digital recorders that people use more often for recording lectures or interviews, which is just totally unsuited to the task. A multiple mic solution would probably be best for us; our space is so tiny that any one-mic solution is probably going to be overwhelmed by the drums or the bass (we're in a basement… [more]

If I can find one, I'll totally break one out. Jaunty!

Great, that's super helpful. I've got both GarageBand and Audacity already, so I'm set there. I'll talk to the others about which method would be best for us, but this all sounds totally doable for me.

Hooray!

I think the priority now is to capture what we sound like live. I'll focus on that and then we can move to the two take approach later if we get that far.

*fans flapjax furiously to free him from his faint*

I know, I know; it's surprising to me, too, but not everyone has listened to the entire catalogue of the Beatles.

I'm glad. Most people find alliteration and puns to be the lowest forms of humor. I think they're delightful.

The threats of hardcore nerdism and undiluted silliness perhaps?

Knock on Wood
And yes, I know that we sound more psychedelic than soul. But you try doing soul without horns.

Yeah, I had the same reaction when one of the guys in my band suggested it.

The Most Wonderful Day of The Year (Misfit Toys)
"A water pistol that shoots jelly."

The delivery on that one gave me a HUGE grin.

This one being the original, of course.

Best of the Web
Aw, thanks! Also, as it has just occurred to me: is your username a reference to Waffle House or similar late night batter-based foodstuffs purveyors from our mutual home state? Or am I just beanplating it?

Excellent. I grew up eating flapjacks and hotcakes, and was somewhat surprised when I discovered that everyone else called them pancakes.

Thanks, mrbill! (And I'm not even singing! Must have inherited my grandmother's radio voice.)

I wondered about that, cortex. I'm such a noob at this, though; I have no ear for that sort of thing yet.
posted to MeFi Music by ocherdraco at 12:03 PM on November 3, 2009
Also, I briefly pondered using "cortex" instead of "becky," but decided that even though it scanned, it wouldn't make any sense at all.
posted to MeFi Music by ocherdraco at 12:04 PM on November 3, 2009
Also also: given that I intend to tinker with the mix on this, does MeFi Music have any way of reuploading to replace a track? If not, is it kosher to upload a new version as a new post? (Presumably a new post would have to have more significant changes than just the mix.)

I'm a longtime listener, first time caller (give or take) over here, and so I don't know my ways around posting stuff.

Sure! That sounds great! What format do you want them in? (I will go figure out how to export individual tracks in GarageBand now.)

Also, the "hell yeahs" are just three different recordings of me, one made artificially lower. It sounds crappy, and not at all like a man, which was the idea. Should you want to throw in an actual male vocal there, I would not object, nosiree.

Yeah, others are saying the same thing about the mix. But I'm new at this. :)

Here's the whole lyric:

Oh, my, god. Becky, look at that post.
It is so big. It looks like
it'll take forever to read.
But, you know, who, like, reads?
They only post it, because,
they know it'll get lots of favorites, 'kay?
I mean, that post, is just so big.
I can't believe it's just… [more]

Broken Wheel (edit)
I love this. Just beautiful.

I admit I was pretty stunned to find that no one else had commented or favorited it—but I imagine that's likely more due to happenstance (the time it was posted, or how many people posted soon after, or similar) than to the song.

Don't let it get you down. :)

The Falcon and The Showman
I want This American Life to use this. They should; it would fit in perfectly with their stable of reusable tracks. So evocative, but so flexible.

Eleven-Nine
Whoa. Have you ever heard "The Rain Never Ends" by Fats Kaplin on 8 Pieces Down Under? Very similar. Creepy.
posted to MeFi Music by ocherdraco at 9:20 PM on March 11, 2009
I think it's just a happy coincidence. (The beginning, in particular, is very similar...a similar chord progression, I think? [I don't play music, I just sing, so I don't really know if that's what I mean.] I actually checked to make sure I wasn't somehow playing the other track in iTunes at the same time.) If you mefimail me an email address, I'll send you a link to download the track (but not tonight, as it's nearly 1:00am here in New York, and I need to sleep).
