Two Danish visitors in car-centric Canada
Well, I just traveled around Denmark and was robbed in my hotel room while I was sleeping, so to each his own, I guess.

Yes, but the thief was able to escape by BICYCLE!

We are blending two families, and now I have two picky eaters, help?
Your desire is to eat vegetables with chicken. Their desire is to eat hot dogs or macaroni and cheese. You both have an extremely limited ideal menu. It would be wise of you to show some compromise. For example, chicken hot dogs, macaroni and cheese with cauliflower, broccoli or peas mixed in? The comments above about what's healthy for you might not even be healthy for a six-year old? They are right on. Kids need fat for brain development. They also need to take baby steps… [more]

Okay, actually you were pulled over because you were driving and you were drunk. If you hadn't been drunk, might have been pulled over but you wouldn't have been arrested.

Based on your question, it seems like you are young, female and employed. That's all going to help you because each factor statistically… [more]

It's "banana," not "'nana"
What I do with kids who are whining or speaking in an age-inappropriate baby voice is just say "what?" I'm sorry, I can't understand you" when they do it. I think you are too casually acquainted to be more direct than that.

Indoor couch to outdoor dog couch
If you coat it with a waterproofing spray you'll change the way the couch smells and potentially the feel of the fabric. That might make it unappealing/unfamiliar to the dog.

I would suggest going in a different direction with a big canopy (maybe something like this?) to protect from rain and, as a bonus, provide some shade for your pooch. For crazy once-a-year style rainstorms, you could cover it with a tarp or move it inside.

A1 vs. A2 milk
I am allergic to cow's milk, I am allergic to soy. I am allergic to almonds, so almond milk is out. A coworker recently asked what I put on my morning cereal and I said tears. I'm pretty sure he thought I was kidding.

Help me rejoin the land of the living.
Honestly, some people require more sleep than others and while 12 hours is definitely on the outer edge of normal it doesn't seem untenable and doesn't have to interfere with your ability to live a normal life. What would interfere is if you are following what you describe as your "natural preference" -- falling asleep around 3-4 AM and waking up between 11 and noon. Have you tried Melatonin? Taken early enough in the evening (like 7-8 PM) it could help you to get… [more]

Any helpful guidance for family member who is leaving High School?
My parents forced me to quit school when I was 15. I worked in a hospice, got a GED, went to college, did a research fellowship at Harvard, immigrated to Canada, and now manage a team of editors in a job I really love.

Quitting school, even though it wasn't by my choice, didn't stop me from doing anything I wanted with my life. Your family member will either be fine or he won't, but that's true for every single person whether or not they are currently enrolled in school.

My son is panicking about learning to swim. Help?
How can we convince him the pool is fun, safe and comfortable?

As an adult, snorkeling and swimming in the ocean is literally my favorite thing to do, I structure my whole year around getting at least one big snorkeling vacation in and I have happily given lessons to complete strangers so they could enjoy this fantastic thing.

handling cat-care while on vacation
My cat is 13 and incredibly delicate and darling and the absolute apple of my eye. Both options you presented -- vet boarding or going to someone's house -- would stress her out to no end and she would spend a full ten days hissing and spite-urinating on every human she could find. Having someone come in every day to pet, feed and scoop her causes absolutely no stress and she is safe, happy and secure. So I would suggest doing that if at all possible.

This is really and truly one of the worst things about working in an office. A lot of people are just weird about food and/or constantly look to compare what they are eating to what other people are eating.

I hit my head several times a week. How do I stop?
Other activities (like heavy exercise or riding roller coasters) can cause concussions or exacerbate existing head injuries so it may not be just the two big incidents (truck, concrete ceiling) that you remember causing the problems. Unfortunately repeated head trauma can have long-term effects if they are not treated properly and your description of hitting your head about once a day on your low sloping ceiling makes me worry that you're compounding your original injuries. Not happy with teeth after braces. What should I do?
How old are you? My dentist told me that if you get braces when you're older and your jaw is set your teeth will move much more easily than if you'd gotten them in adolescence (when the jaw can harden/set around the straightened teeth). For that reason, I have to wear a permanent behind-the-teeth retainer.

FWIW, I got my braces off at 20 and at 33 they're still straight.

How can I keep going forward during a series of crises?
If you have a child and don't have an income, that's what welfare and food stamps are for.

The OP is in Ontario, which does not have a food stamps program. There are food banks (which may be scarce in rural Ontario) but that's it for food help.

Vegan pasta recipes
In a baking dish with proper sides (ie, not a cookie sheet) toss whole white mushrooms and big wedges of sweet onion with olive oil and salt and pepper. Bake at 400 for between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on how long you have (longer is better). Toss the mushrooms and onions with wide, thin pasta (a vegan egg noodle would be great).

PS: the mushrooms and onions are also amazing on a fresh crusty baguette.

How to survive a low-iodine diet (difficulty level: vegetarian)
It is possible to make iodine-free bread; a friend of mine was going through the same thing and one of her friends made it for her. She treasured every slice! Have tampons gotten longer or has my vagina gotten shorter?
Several years agoI had a few lesions removed from my cervix and immediately lost my ability to comfortably use tampons. I had mostly been using OB but that and everything else I tried just hurt. Eventually I discovered that Tampax Pearl tampons worked well, even though the actual tampon is larger/longer than OB. They have a pretty elaborate plastic applicator that gives me a little pang of environmental guilt but oh well.

Okay, but why? Why did you need to tell her more than once when your surgery was? This language indicates to me that you weren't getting what you wanted/expected from the exchange so rather than rephrase your information (my surgery is X morning and I feel panicky about it, can you call me so we can talk) you just kept telling her the same thing. If you are lukewarm on Montreal, you might consider going to Quebec City and staying at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. It is luxurious and spectacular and it's really well-situated for a lot of long, leisurely walks to explore.

My preschooler is the slowest eater on the planet
Smoothies may work well for breakfast and they can really be packed with nutrition (and protein, too, if you throw in some protein powder). They can also hold a crazy amount of sugar, so watch out for that. Is he HUNGRY after he eats a small amount? Is it just that you're expecting him to eat more than he really wants?
