Attorney General John Ashcroft sings (sort of) "U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft ended a speech at a Charlotte, North Carolina seminary with a rousing rendition of a song he wrote called 'Let The Eagles Soar'' (Not safe for work unless you really want to annoy your coworkers)

They've been having fun with that clip on Letterman for the past couple of days -- it is a thing of beauty!

His naive and idealistic patriotism fills my heart with childish joy. His infiltration of the government with a puritannical, marginalizing brand of fascism makes me want to train my body into a ruthless weapon for the coming apocalypse.

Not much to say except that I cannot wait until the Singing Senators mount a kickass reunion tour.

I went into it thinking he was going to sing acappella, but that evil canned background music was a little hard to stomach. If you can look past the obviously cheeseball lyrics and music, he actually has a decent singing voice. I wonder if he's in the White House choir?

lf this whole Attorney General thing doesn't work out for him, I bet he can get a job singing loungey-style stuff on a cruise boat somewhere.

That song is scary, because when he sings it, it sounds exactly like the theme song to Brazil.

As much as I hate John Asscroft and the totally jingoistic America that he wants to (re?)create, he has a decent singing voice (though his compositional skills are a bit limited, and his phrasing a little odd) and the balls to sing in public.

He's almost as good as Orrin Hatch. You can even buy his albums online!

Oh, wait. He might have just written that stuff. That may not be him singing. If it is, he's got great range.

Naive and idealistic ... annoying my coworkers ... the screeching sounds of a political figure's ill-advised entry into the world of song ... where have I heard this before?

I don't think you ever have to worry about a Singing Senators reunion tour, considering they consisted of three Republicans and Jim Jeffords.

You think they're still peeved at Jeffords, Aaron? That's hardly the christian reaction, is it?

WWJD?

What would Jeffords do? Why, he'd sing!

The Smoking Gun has a report on a tape of gospel songs Ashcroft released a few years back, complete with a truly horrible MP3. (It was posted here before, but I can't find the thread.)

David Letterman even played the tape of Ashcroft singing for Cher. He asked her what she thought and she just smiled and looked very uncomfortable. I think Letterman's gonna plan doing a show which is nothing but him showing that tape over and over again.

And the top ten list tonight! "Let that eagle sooooaaarrr!.."
