The quote is from a poem called "When I was a kid", although my favorite is "Tech support", it isn't as quotable.

"In my porn movies, the girls wouldn't even have to get naked; they just take the guys down to the rec room and beat them repeatedly at chess."

Funniest thing I've heard all day. And at 11:47, I feel qualified in saying that.

For those of us here in Austin, any idea about live shows he may be doing? That was just fucking hilarious.

This is my first exposure to the Poetry Slam genre, and I really enjoyed this. But, is this representative of what I might find at a poetry slam?

Haven't been to a slam in a few years, but I didn't like this piece too much. There are different kinds of venues. Slams do tend to attract more proselike pieces that lend themselves to frenetic spoken performances, but there is real poetry that pays attention to word choice and sound, even if there's none of that old-skool rhyming. Still, the point of a slam is entertainment more than poesy. Depending, the competitive aspects can be played up or toned down. But generally, people are getting drunker as the evening goes on, and winners may be more cheap performance pieces with strong reliance on humor or (as in some of these) anger. It's more fun than a poetry reading, though! Does acronym still work?

I have seen some live poetry slam. Was tempted to participate myself, but my choice of public delivery of my written works is somewhere between Woody Allen and Stephen Wright. I see no value in how most people do it, but that's the fashionable thing, to spit and spew into the microphone as fast as possible.

Take away the coffee and it's standup comedy.
