The A-List Fan Club. I know you're sick of hearing about it, but I found this site too amusing to not mention. Does anyone know the story behind it?

(Yes, I suspect you're being sarcastic.)

But is it sarcastic, or ironic?

I vote for ironic.

Sarcasm is very often just cheap semantic inversion masquerading as irony.

That Nader shore did ruin things for Gore.
posted by mikel at 12:41 PM on November 17, 2000

Sigh.

How many times must I tell you people? When you duplicate a copy of Nader, you're not stealing his popularity, you're just sharing your sincerity.

Now rather than only having one copy of his elite status, there's two Jakob Neilsons that suck, on with which Flash sucks for you, and one with which Flash sucks for me.

You're not hurting Netscape 6 when you trade it with friends, but if you make money providing access to Dubya's quote list, you're taking money out of the A-listers that have worked hard to make mauve the new sarcastic!

It's sardonic. And I may start a Z-List blog. Like all playgrounds we've known, blogland naturally has people who worry about trivialities like a-list kids.

It must be Friday, or free prozac day at the clinic.

I'm on Wellbutrin, so there. I did Paxil for a while, but it made me see too many piggies on the bus. Is it Friday already?

Anyone who's ever seen how Wendell dresses knows that's right. (I'm on the A-list?! News to me. I figured I was rather somewhat farther down on the consonant scale.)

who wants to be on the a-list anyway? aaaack!

popularity reminds me of high school; for real.

How 'bout we change this A-List to the A-Team? Then we can all say "I pity the fool" again, just like it was 1985...
posted by jmcnally at 9:27 PM on November 18, 2000

who wants to be on the a-list anyway?

aekastar, no one wants to be on the A-List, except (apparently) the people who write nasty screeds about how evil the A-List is. The people who are supposedly on the A-List certainly didn't ask for it.

And Brad, you'll always be on my A-List.
posted by daveadams at 11:23 PM on November 18, 2000

Will someone please draw up a list for me of who is A-list and who isn't? I wouldn't want to be hating people when I'm supposed to be being hated by them. Or the other way around. Oh it's all so confusing...
posted by barbelith at 5:44 AM on November 19, 2000

The first rule of the A-List is there is no A-List. The second rule of the A-List is there is no A-List.

It's pretty safe to say that if you see someone's blog linked to on more than 10 sites you reach by randomly surfing blogging-software sites, then someone somewhere considers them A-List, and therefore they are to be hated with extreme prejudice.

It's like an indie band. If someone you don't know has heard of them, they've sold-out and are no longer cool.
posted by cCranium at 10:47 AM on November 20, 2000

daveadams - very true.

and yeah, I know I'm not a-list. I'm only linked in a few places. not that I'm complaining. it's nice to know if I'm genuninely read instead of just up on someone's list because it's supposedly *cool* to do so.
