Who Goes To These Things? Now? Self Explanatory

Plenty of people still go to these things! They can use the moral support, if nothing else. And the comforting self-delusion that comes from networking just like in the good old days, even if only 2 people there are actually hiring instead of looking to be hired.

The more important question is: Who gets the money from the sales of booze and food? I want to invest in them.

It was a running joke at this year's SXSW that I wanted to see the organizers throw a "cocktails with no one" party. It would entail just a bunch of people hanging out at a bar, paying for their own drinks and talking amongst themselves.

hey mat...that is every night about a block from my office.

except they have video games--and Pedro the Lion is even going to play there in a few weeks.

Matt, that was pretty much the idea behind "Break Bread with Brad." Buncha nobodies, drinkin'', eatin', smokin' and talkin'. ;-)

Oh, and Courtney is Courtney Pulitzer who, I discovered years ago, owned this domain which my employers at the time -- the dead-tree publisher arm of the family -- wanted very, very badly.

Except that you obviously all think you're somebody's.

Thank God for the Crash. Somebody needs to pull you people over at the pretentiousness turn pike, as Denis would say. I live in Seattle; I know who Bezo's gets his coke from. I smoke pot.

So what?

As Lily Tomlin said, "I always said I wanted to be somebody when I grew up. Maybe I should have been more specific!"

I've never been specific in my entire life. ;-)

Uh-huh. And how many guitarists to play MDFMK?

One. And 59 to sit around in the Hurricane Cafe and go "I could do that, except better and without Rebirth."

Admit it. You were happerier with the job you got delivering pizza on three days worth of acid than you were making 90k as grand poohbah of whatever you made work before the east coast bought out the VC on the west coast.

Wasn't that long ago I was standing behind an IT kiddie going off on his new job at drugstore.com and how it was going to revolutionize the way people shopped for vitamins, in line for the teller at the bank. The teller very drolly replied "Oh, you mean like Egghead?" to which the fellow promptly replied "Who?."

Welcome to Seattle. Will the last person providing MS tech support please turn of the lights on your way out?

And don't let the door hit you in the ass when you leave?

"PretentiousnessTurnpike", or Vapid Pretentious Turnpike. Partially out of curiosity, partially out of a need to network (or so I thought) to fund my company's Web site, I went to one of these things at some club called Ohm, or something, in NYC about a year ago. Have to agree the crash is good (NASDAQ in the early Renaissance years--1500's) will signal a full return to sanity.

So, uh, who does Bezos get his coke from?

Ummm... huh?
I live in the North West and work in the IT industry. I'm genuinely and completely clueless as to what most of the posts in this thread are about. Should I be worried?

Apparently not, since it didn't help those who had a clue about it. It's probably a good thing: the real .com wave is in the future.

Don't worry, normy. I still don't even understand what the link is about, much less the rest of the thread.

Must run. Bezos just paged me.
