Kids today...
why when I was a kid, all I had was seven feet of Hotwheels track and a naked G.I. Joe.

[T]wo-thirds of parents say their youngsters are very or somewhat spoiled, Time magazine said in an opinion poll released on Sunday.

Yes, but 87% of American children say their parents are either strongly not fair, or not fair somewhat.

this is such an article for The Onion... is this really any surprise? Is this really news?

keep them in the refrigerator, they'll stay fresh for days!

From hotdoughnutsnow:
"I had naked G.I. Joe"
Anyone surprised?

more study reveals
all of his toys were in fact
forced naturalists.

Sound of loud knocking
distracts him from further posts
cops: "throw out the dolls!"

hotdoughnutsnow weeps
as he is led off in chains
His secret is out!

My Buddy found stripped
and manacled to bedpost
innocence now lost!

Wow, got to stop drinking Code Red! It is kind of fun to annoy people with Haiku, though. Maybe we should designate a daily Haiku post so holgate doesn't grind his teeth down to stubs.

and by the way, is it "hot doughnut snow" or "hot doughnuts now"? Just wondering.

Something tells me that if you'd run this same survey 100 years ago, you'd have gotten the same results. Or 200 years ago. Or 500 years ago. Or etcetera.

"These damn spoiled kids, with their newfangled wheels and fire... When I was their age, we had to build whole pyramids by hand, using nothing more than levers and the blood and sweat of thousands of enslaved barbarians..."

Why would anyone have an _opinion_ poll about a _factual_ issue anyway?

"Is the moon a cheese?
Yes: 51,25%
No: 23,17%
Unsure: 100%"

"SHOCKING POLL REVEALS: MOON IS CHEESE!"

A reminder from Bye Bye Birdie:

Kids! You can talk and talk til your face is blue!
Kids! But they still do just what they want to do!
Why can't they be like we were?
Perfect in every way!
What's the matter with kids today?

(The rest of the lyrics are here.)

ook, those "thousands of enslaved barbarians" who built the pyramids would be the Jews.

I agree that nostalgia invalidates the conclusion that kids are more spoiled. It proves that parents *think* kids are more spoiled, but that's not saying much.

How come we never see "Adults More Spoiled Than Decade Ago"?

This should hold true, logically, if all successive generations of kids have become progressively more spoiled...

Adults today. Yeesh.

True dat. The baby boomers are well known for their 'me' attitude. Is it a surprise that they raise children who emulate these traits?

Listen folks.

When I was six, I didn't have a TV. Or a VCR. Or a gameboy. Or two bikes. Or a motorized Barbie Jeep. Or a computer - of my own. I did not regularly eat meals created for my own enjoyment, separate from the meal consumed by the remaining family. I did not regularly insist on watching TV 24 hours a day.

Yet my sister does. Does that mean that my own view of her as spoiled is simply relative?

A six year-old with a TV? Come on.

ook, those "thousands of enslaved barbarians" who built the pyramids would be the Jews.

ktheory - complete and utter bollocks.

There isn't a scrap of archaelogical evidence to show that enslaved Jews built the Egyptian pyramids, and a whole bundle to show that they were built by ordinary Egyptians working during the Nile's flood season, in highly competitive teams who received, amongst other benefits, expert medical care.

The Torah says that the Jews built storage facilities at Pithom (probably ancient Tinas) and Raamses (either Pelusium or Quantir). (Exodus 1:11). There are no pyramids at any of these places. Methinks you watch too many movies.

Darn, I spent too long trying to find a naked G. I. Joe link I remembered visiting and then quonsar beat me to it.

I'll just have to settle for the comparative anatomy of G. I. Joe link instead. this link appeared on MemePool a while back.

HotWheel and G.I Joe? You were LUCKY

When I was a kid all we had was a bit of string and a wooden stick .. and we were the lucky ones.
posted by stbalbach at 3:51 AM on July 31, 2001

LUXURY!

I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, (pause for laughter), eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'.

Funny -- I always heard it was space aliens who built the pyramids. Space aliens working during the Nile's flood season, in highly competitive teams who received, amongst other benefits, expert medical care.
