Jobs buying low and selling high?

What careers mainly involve buying low and selling high by knowing a market in great detail, in part by making contacts and in part by combing through reams of information - and how does a college student get an entry level job in them? NOT interested in entrepreneurial suggestions, or things that require much theory or advanced mathematics (no i-banking/hedge funds) - more emphasis on information-gathering and shrewdness. What reasonably solid jobs might there be and what's the entry path (recommended academic background, internships, etc.)?

Let's have bizarre celebrations

I'm compiling a list of the best songs of the 2000s. The ones that aren't just "Ah, that's kinda nice," but that you have to stop yourself from listening to on a repeat loop. The songs you'd make sure to put on a mix CD for a friend who hasn't paid attention to new music in this whole decade and wants to know what they missed. (This is for a blog post.)

Is there a public domain resource for pictures of people along with their ages at the time that the picture was taken?

Is there a public domain resource for pictures of people along with their ages at the time that the picture was taken? The best I've come up with is places with government info which have pictures of politicians. Anything better with a wider range of types of people and ages? Obviously dating sites would be a great place to get this info, but none of them are going to be public domain.

Help me get to TED

I want to attend a TED conference. I'm a junior at a liberal arts College in the US, and I have a $3000 grant to do pretty much anything I want next summer (mid-May through mid-August 2010). Give me your suggestions of awesome things in any discipline that $3000-$5000 will let me do/make/research/found/publish/etc. (If it's a money-making business venture that a collegiate entrepreneur can run, it can cost more than $5000.)

Can I learn quantum mechanics?

I'm reading Quantum: a Guide for the Perplexed and I'm enjoying the graphics, history and simplification of the math and science used to explain quantum mechanics. But I'm reasonably well versed in math and science - I took a year of college physics, linear algebra, and diff eq about ten years ago. Is there any chance of me learning to understand the equations and papers of Planck and Einstein that are the basis of QM? Are there any good books that could help walk someone like me through this stuff? Or am I stuck as a layperson unless I earn a degree in math or physics?

Has anyone seen this image before?

What is the origin of this image? Is it from an advertisement? Is it an original artwork? Photographer, artist, illustrator, ad/design agency, stock photo/illustration site - any information at all would help.

Has refining search algorithms reached a point of stagnation?

Is there any evidence, academic or from industry, showing that search engines improving their algorithms have been hitting diminishing returns? Or, contrary, has there been significant progress recently in search ranking algorithms?

Richard Nisbett's "The Geography of Thought" over-generalised and realistic?

Help me determine the accuracy of Richard Nisbett's "The Geography of Thought : How Asians and Westerners Think Differently". I haven't read the book yet; however, I was shown a video associated with the book in my class. While watching the video, my skeptical senses tingled; therefore, now I'm trying to find criticisms of the book. From my perspective, the concepts of difference seemed too far generalised and "Western" and "Asian" seemed too black and white. The book seems popular; however, is it more pop science than real science? How scewed is the hard science of the book?

Helping the child of an illegal immigrant get right with the law

I'm in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and I'm trying to help my 15 year old Little Sis get her learner's permit and on the road to a drivers license. We need to order her birth certificate from Texas. However, parental permission is needed, and her undocumented mom doesn't want to send in the required copy of a photo ID.

Ideas for Interesting Part-Time Job

Meta-Filter worked well for me recently, so I thought I’d try again. I realize that what I’m asking is probably a pipedream, but here goes. I live in Los Angeles, CA, have a day job, and am looking for ideas for part-time work, evening and weekends, that would bring in between $500 - $1000 a month.

Help me defeat a spider infestation!

I live in a 15th floor condo. We get tons and tons of spiders on our balconies, windows, everything. Right now it's winter, so there are no spiders, only their little cocoons, which are everywhere. How can I get rid of these cocoons before they hatch, and hopefully disuade the spiders from coming back?

I need a Time Tracker that nags me or just an app to nag me.

I need a Time Tracker that nags me or just an app to nag me. I've searched past ask me-fi threads and am aware of the multitude of web, widget, desktop and offline time tracking apps and methods. I'm having trouble finding one to nag me on a configurable schedule. For example, every hour or so between 8am and 6 pm I'd like something to remind me to track time. At that point, I could jot notes on paper or in a text file or whatever, but if the nagging app could facilitate jotting down what I've been working on and for which job, so much the better. I don't need reporting or any other features, just a nag, then a place to enter a job number and task note. I'm using Windows. I could set up a recurring calendar event in Outlook to do the nagging (and the ability to snooze an Outlook reminder is a plus), but I'm seeking a possibly more integrated alternative that is better suited for the task. Thanks for the insight, hive mind!
