Can a husband sue his wife?

Are there any circumstances in (UK) law that would allow a friend to 'sue' his wife for what he considers the money she stole from their joint account.

When Ad Placement Goes Wrong

A shocking scene from the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica was paired with a rather unfortunate commercial. Warning: Big spoiler in the scene if you follow the show and have not caught up. Graphic violence.

How did you become an adult after messing up your youth?

Did you spend the years out of high school and into your early-mid twenties royally fucking up from an academic standpoint, bouncing in and out of college--but then went on to be a successful, productive adult despite it? What did you do? How did it happen? Yes, this question is young and silly but I need the advice of those older and wiser.

I walk the same streets. Why don't I notice these things?

I work as a film location scout in New York City. My day is basically spent combing the streets for interesting and unique locations for feature films. In my travels, I often stumble across some pretty incredible sights, most of which are ignored every day by thousands of New Yorkers in too much of a rush to pay attention. As it happens, it's my job to pay attention, and I've started this blog to keep a record of what I see.

I'm looking for some specific spooky Christmas music, can you help me?

Some time ago either on MeFi or BoingBoing there was a link to a bunch of songs that I *swear* were Christmas songs played in the wrong key or one half-tone down or something... Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about and where I could find this (again)?

The Diving Pool

"A dreamlike state tinged with a nightmare" - that's The Diving Pool, a newly published collection of three novellas by Yoko Ogawa. Despite having won every major literary award in Japan, Ogawa is little known to the English speaking world (the French have translated her extensively), although two stories - Pregnancy Diary (one of the novellas in The Diving Pool) and The Cafeteria in the Evening and A Pool In the Rain - have graced the pages of The New Yorker. Here's a preview at Google Books. If you liked that, consider pre-ordering The Housekeeper and the Professor, her latest novel to be translated into English.

Help me understand the current economy.

In light of yesterdays events with Lehman Brothers, Merril Lynch and AIG and all the hubbub with the the "Mac" banks, I'm pretty confused about the economy. I'd like to spend the day reading up to understand the entire situation, starting with the housing market leading up to Bear Stearns and culminating this weekend's events. Could someone please recommend some key articles that will help me wrap my brain around this entire situation?

Sarah Palin as McCain's running-mate

Fox, the BBC and CNN have all revealed that Republican US presidential candidate John McCain has picked Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate on his 72nd birthday on the eve of the start of Republican National Convention. Despite being wildly popular in Alaska, Palin has recently been involved in an investigation over whether she dismissed a public safety commissioner because he refused to dismiss her former brother-in-law.

[Link is NSFW: graphic childbirth.] What is the maternity staff chanting in this video? They seem to have a few different songs, one for when the woman is pushing and another for once the baby is born. The notes for the video say that they are in "an Asian country" but I don't know what language they're speaking.

"No fixed pushers, and no magnet skateboards."

These "track boards," or "fix push" boards, were initially developed to be raced in the velodrome, and differ from traditional skateboards in one major way: the rider can never coast. Historical Stock Certificate: Worth Anything?

My father has recently found a stock certificate for 500 shares of Norpoint Exploration Limited (issued or certified by Sterling Trusts Corporation out of Toronto on April 22, 1966). This has been living in a junk drawer since 1966 or so, if I had to guess. He's convinced that he's hit the jackpot but I can't find much in the way of information on either of these companies which leads me to think that he hasn't found anything of value. Given that Google isn't helping, who should he talk to about this? Has he found something of value?

Algebra for Social Scientists

I tutor several people in a "Mathematics for the Social Sciences" course at a local university. This semester the material is focused on matrix algebra. For the most part, they have no trouble wrapping their heads around the notions of basic vector operations, row reduction, systems of equations, inverse matrices and determinants. But, they have a lot of problems with more abstract concepts such as linear independence, subspaces, basis and dimension. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on helping them visualize and understand these ideas more clearly.

Looking for a smooth function from noisy observations

Statsfilter: I have a bunch of noisy measurements. Each has an (x,y) coordinate and a "score" for that location. Most of the scores are trustworthy, but with the occasonal outlier. I want to come up with a function f(x,y) that estimates what the score at (x, y) would be (whether or not I have an observation at exactly that location). I'd like the function to be smooth and resilient to noise. Can someone point me in the right direction?
