So what Boeing planes should I avoid right now?

I'm looking at a transatlantic flight this summer and I'm wondering how worried I should be about Boeings, especially the 737 Max.

Serena is an amazing, one-of-a-kind cat!

My Cat Shoots Rubber Bands From Her Paws [6m16s] My black cat Serena has not only learned how to shoot rubber bands, she has mastered the art. I feel like a circus hawker, but YOU WON'T SEE THIS ANYWHERE ELSE BUT HERE! ... Serena is a 4 year old Domestic Short Hair. She has no top incisors, so her tongue sticks out ALL THE TIME!!!! 😺

Script my week of lousy doctors appointments?

As is clear in my question history, health stuff has been rough for me the past few years. In the next three weeks, I have (hard won) appointments with each of my specialists and my family doctor. I really need to get this right, but there are a lot of complications. I could use some help seeing the forest because it feels like I'm being smacked over the head by a whole load of trees.

Indicator Species

Monarch butterfly numbers in Mexico plummet to near record low - "Biologists pin the blame for the nosedive on higher-than-usual temperatures and drought conditions where the butterfly reproduces, mostly in northwestern U.S. states like Washington, Oregon and California."

Another Sleepy Dusty Delta Sweete

Singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry shot to fame with Ode to Billie Joe and had a smattering of later hits, notably Fancy, covered by artists such as Irma Thomas, Spanky Wilson, Orville Peck and Reba McEntire. Though a flop at the time, her fantastic second album, The Delta Sweete, picked up many fans since, including Mercury Rev, whose The Delta Sweete Revisited covered eleven of twelve songs, each with a different singer: Norah Jones, Hope Sandoval, Rachel Goswell, Carice van Houten, Lætitia Sadier, Margo Price, Susanne Sundfør, Vashti Bunyan & Kaela Sinclair, Phoebe Bridgers, Marissa Nadler, Beth Orton, closing with Ode to Billie Joe as sung by Lucinda Williams. Missing track Louisiana Man was released later, sung by Erika Wennerstrom. Stuart Berman interviewed Mercury Rev about it.

Reduce my anxiety with hopefully unnecessary tips for being homeless?

Gold Coast Australia. I'm waiting anxiously to find out if my rent has gone up again because my income has gone down, and too big a rent increase and I either have to move to an extremely rural part of the Australia somewhere else far away from my medical team (various mental health issues, PTSD, aphasia, regular lung CTs, regular colonoscopies, arthritis) or get a tent because I will be homeless. Thanks. I hope not to need your advice.

A Gorey/Bellairs Discovery

How to support trans girl scouts

Did you know that for a long time, Girl Scouts has openly included transgender and nonbinary individuals in its membership? I first learned of this three years ago while searching for a source for my annual Girl Scout cookie purchase. At that time, a wave of anti-trans sentiment was intensifying, prompting me to seek out transgender Girl Scouts from whom to order. One major benefit of their online ordering system is that it allows for trans girl scouts to sell their cookies with relative privacy and no contact between the scout and the purchaser when it comes to online orders. ... the kids are under attack this year more than ever, so let's give them some joy. Erin Reed on where to get your cookies.

How Finland is solving homelessness. An incredible video to me, about Finland's housing and accompanying support solutions for homeless people. Showing so many benefits to everyone involved (as well as 'saving the tax payer money') by providing housing for everyone, however low they get.

Skull shape can predict how extinct vultures fed on carrion

Skull shape can predict how extinct vultures fed on carrion. Variations in the skull shape of vultures have been found to coincide with the preferred method each species uses to feed on a carcass. Learning more about the form and function of living species is helping scientists to understand more about the behavior of extinct birds such as the giant Haast's eagle.

"This is nice, ma, everything's fresh...including Vinnie!"

Dom DeLuise in "Eat This! The Video"
In the late 1980s, actor/comedian Dom DeLuise produced a series of cooking videos to promote Eat This…It’ll Make You Feel Better!—a book of Italian home cooking dishes inspired by his mother’s recipes. The food all looks delicious, but the real draw is Dom himself—a bottomless fount of ebullience, laughter, and generous good humor—whether preparing a recipe alongside his adoring (and adorable) wife, helping his 80-year-old “mamma” select a nice pork sausage at the neighborhood meat market, or just clowning around with the local workers and residents of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn (the very streets where he was born and raised.) A lighthearted, nostalgia-inducing snapshot of a bygone era.

Giving to food banks effectively

Rick Beetham on Mastodon asked a local food bank for the best items to donate to them, and came up with a list of 20 tips. The comments also has useful info, including that it's better to donate directly to the food bank instead of through the grocery store (and that way you might even get a receipt for writing it off on your taxes), and that giving money is usually best, because food banks often can get discounts that are unavailable to donators.

Feeding fat balls to coral could combat damage from climate change

How feeding little fat balls to coral could combat damage from climate change. A team of scientists are getting creative about how to provide these underwater gardens with the best chance of survival against global warming, starting with coral found in Sydney Harbour. (Note that this is not a perfect solution: it's more like applying firm pressure to a bleeding wound while you wait for the-ambulance-of-reduced-carbon-emissions.)

Songs about "the sound of _______"

What songs (of any genre) refer prominently in their title or lyrics to "the sound of _______"? I am trying to make a big list; a few examples to get things started are
  • The Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel)
  • The Sound of da Police (KRS-One)
  • Chain Gang (Sam Cooke; "that's the sound of the men working on the chain gang")

Name! This! Site!

You know how sometimes you see someone say something online that is so wrongheaded, you really wish you had the initiative to bookmark/screenshot and check in on them later to let them know how wrong they turned out to be? I want to build a website to facilitate that kind of petty, told-you-so receipt keeping. What should I call it?

It's Tasty Being Green

While hunger may be the best sauce in the world, most prefer something with a bit more taste. And since it's summer and beautiful herbs abound, let's look at many ways of bringing a "green" zip to the plate. (Plus it's Hatch Chile season!) As with all things culinary, this will be woefully incomplete, short sighted, lacking the complete picture and not the way your nana made it and that's great - more green sauces!

How does Asahi Super Dry Zero work?

It doesn't taste like beer, per se. But it tastes more like beer than a lot of NA beers, and it does so with zero calories and zero carbs. I don't understand how this is possible. I guess I was just laboring under the assumption that the flavor of beer is pretty inseparable from the carbs in beer and it's blowing my mind that you can have one without the other. How do they make this stuff?

Can I create a 40hz anti-Alzheimer set-up on my own?
