MetaTalk post: Bucket wash this
I'M IN UR PLACE WHERE U DARE NOT LOOK STARING BACK AT U.

You can travel from point A to point B with a transporter, provided you are okay with the metaphysical "death" question.

STEP 1: FOLD U A TESSERACT IN TIME AND/OR SPACE WITH UR MIND

Step 2: THE SPICE MUST FLOW.

MeFi post: Chess tactics explained in plain English
Yeah, well -- I taught my children chess, and I have never let them beat me at anything, on principle. They've been winning against me fair and square since they were five. I always play to win, and every once in a while I do. They're smarter than me -- what can I do?

The other day, I beat my son (now 15). I was elated! I was the rock star of the world! Yay me! Except for days afterward, my daughter was beating him over the head with it, which became kind of a buzzkill.... [more]

But let me again emphasize, to be good at chess, you need to study and read a bit.

But you also have to have the talent.

I used to be, what I thought, was a pretty decent chess player. I easily beat most people I played and could defeat most of those hand-held computers that were coming out in the 1980s.

Then, one day, a friend invited me over for a smoke and a drink. Seeing that he had a chess table... [more]

MeFi post: He, For One, Does Not Welcome Our New Wii Overlords
I hope this delusion snob will reg up and post to this thread. I've been playing video games for longer than he's been alive, and as one of those older women he dismisses, I would relish the chance to meet him and kick his ass in any video game he chooses.

It's on like Donkey Kong, fucker. How cute am I now?

(afterwards we'll have homemade chocolate chip cookies and lemonade, and you'll like it, you bastard)

Ask MeFi post: Fugly!
Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand.

Ask MeFi post: Green Eggs & Hamlet
In the late forties, Borges wrote a series of pieces on Dante, one of which was entitled The False Problem of Ugolino, in reference to the poet's encounter with Count Ugolino Gherardesca, who he finds imprisoned in ice in the ninth circle [Canto XXXII-XXXIII]. Before his death, and as a capital punishment, Ugolino had been walled up inside a tower along with his children; Dante wonders if Ugolino had devoured any of them, in order to perhaps delay his own death from... MeFi post: The Power of the Penis
macadamiaranch writes "I just showed this to my husband, and he didn't think it was funny at all. Which makes me question our entire marriage."

He's your *husband*, see. He hasn't been around, he isn't a ho, he isn't aware of the power of the penis and he doesn't know how to soothe a woman.
He's not working the sides, working the middle or hitting the bottom. It's no wonder he doesn't think it's funny. He doesn't know how to... [more]

MeFi post: June Porter Speaks
Man that was good.

You remember what you were doing that day. It's a cliché now. But I do.

I remember what I was doing the day Kennedy was shot.

I literally shit my pants. At least twice. And I cried almost all day.

But that could have been the result of the hot barrel of the Italian-made rile burning against my tiny thigh as I crawled through the weeds from the Grassy Knoll. Plus with all the... [more]

MetaTalk post: "This [thread] will Wendell." Please explain.
December 19

First attempt at summit of MeTa proved daunting. One-liners and cryptic references flying; visibility low. Sherpas insisted we return to basecamp, and I agreed. We may scuttle the expedition, return to MeFi or AskMe, try again when the weather is warmer. Spirits are low. Has not wendelled.

MeFi post: Quebecois nation
I love, love, love the priorities there. :)

The push to keep Quebec within Canada isn't for geographic, cultural or economic reasons. It's because we need goalies.

MetaTalk post: Issues on sewing machine warez
There has been so little about warez on MetaFilter that I had to go look in wikipedia to see precisely what the term means, and there I discovered much to my surprise that it is not pronounced "juarez." Heh.
