What "overweight" looks like and why BMI is nuts.

Illustrated BMI Categories, a Flickr project where you can see what "underweight," "normal," "overweight," "obese," and "morbidly obese," BMI categories look like on real people (safe for work) (mostly women). I think that many people would be surprised by what 180lbs looks like. In addition to not looking what you might have expected fat to look like, it may also not mean what you thought it meant:

Make my dogs and baby get along

Mrs In_Oz is pregnant. We have two good natured, but enormous wolf-hound cross mastiff dogs. Since we have a bit of time up our sleeves, is there anything that we can do to assist in the inevitable integration of baby to beast?

Favorite History of Science Books

What are the best history of science books for the intelligent layperson? Some examples along these lines include Richard Rhodes' "The Making of the Atomic Bomb", David Bodanis' "E=mc2" and Dava Sobel's "Longitude"; books which mix equally well the explanation of scientific concepts with historical/biographical storytelling, and are not intended for practitioners of the field. In addition to general suggestions, specific recommendations about the history of probability & statistics and the history of science in the ancient/medieval world would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Costume ideas for infants

I'm looking for some good ideas for infant Halloween costumes. We have a 5 month old daughter that we'd love to dress up (mostly for the cute pictures) but we're short on ideas. I've seen all the 'cute' costumes (some into the hundreds of dollars) available for sale on various sites but none of them are striking me as particularly worth the money.

You're so smart you probably think this post is about you

"You're really smart!" Psychologist Carol Dweck says that praising a child for being smart only teaches the kid to avoid any effort that might fail. "When we praise children for their intelligence, we tell them that this is the name of the game: Look smart, don't risk making mistakes." Malcolm Gladwell chimes in with his thoughts on the importance of being a smart kid, "What a gifted child is, in many ways, is a gifted learner. And what a gifted adult is, is a gifted doer. And those are quite separate domains of achievement."

How to impress my foodie friends?

My friends are really into good food, good wine, good conversation. How can I throw a dinner party that will knock them off their feet? I am reasonably comfortable in the kitchen, and generally don't have a problem finding decent recipes. I want the party to seem effortless and casual, like it's not something I spent all of Saturday working on, but leaves them desperate for an invite to the next one. Give me your tips!!

Defining the fundmentals in baseball?

I am a late-blooming Baseball fan. I grew up in New Orleans (no baseball), lived in Boston for six years, and now reside in Houston. Since baseball is religion in Boston, and since I was there to see Boston win in 2004, I have become something of a fan. Here are some questions that have bugged me since I started watching:

two introverts and a baby

My husband and I are expecting our first child - we are older, fairly introverted, no extended family nearby, and most of our friends either have older, not-very-dependent children, or are childfree. We don't belong to a church or synagogue (and won't be joining one) and our neighborhood is secluded and full of older folks who we don't really interact with much. I have a very real fear that I will be isolated once I have this child and stay at home with it - a friend of mine said "don't expect to find a fun time at Gymboree - those mothers are bitches!" So there goes that. Has anyone else overcome their introvert tendencies once they reproduce? If at all possible, I want my baby to get out in the world more than I usually do. I'm intimidated by the hot young moms I see with their babies in slings around town - I don't think I would have much in common with them.

Entertain me in print.

I'm looking for a good book to take on a vacation: nothing too heavy, but nothing too brain-dead. (Too heavy=Shake hands with the devil, Guns Germs and Steel, etc. Too brain dead = Shopaholic-type books, drugstore mysteries, etc). I want good writing without having to think too much. Something along the lines of The Corrections or The Time Traveller's Wife would be great.

Help with my stained stainless steel!

Silverwarefilter: As much as I hate to waste a mefi question on this, but I feel I have to because it's driving me crazy. I have a set of stainless steel silverware and a set of cutlery also made of stainless steel (different brands/sets). We wash them in the dishwasher and they are constantly getting these orange like rust stains on them. How do I get rid of these? They can be rubbed off with some heavy scrubbing but I want the stains to stop recurring. Any ideas?

How many nukes would we need to replace oil, coal, natural gas

Lets just say that the U.S. decided to stop burning hydrocarbons (oil, coal, natural gas) completely for environmental reasons. Lets say that everything went electric. Cars, Power Plants, factories, everything. How many nuclear plants (using current technology) would we need to produce? Would there be one in every moderate sized town? Also, how long would the raw materials last before another energy crisis was imminent (peak uranium, I guess)?
