Ask MeFi post: Dog interaction confusion; please help me untangle the confusion.
I think it's easy to get wrapped up in the aspects relating to the dog/gogs in general, but really, I think this experience helped you (correctly) ID out this guy as the kind of person who thinks rules meant for everyone can be rewritten as suits an exceptional person such as himself, but nevertheless also has rules for everyone else. Those guys kind of suck, and if I'm reading you right that you broke it off, I think you did yourself a solid.

Ask MeFi post: Must see TV, except for fine art
Let me be negative for a moment: I hated the Louvre. Worst experience I've ever had in a museum. It was a light crowd day and we got there very early and it was still such a shitshow that it was impossible to really commune with anything that anyone else wanted to see. So, as far as tips for the Louvre? Find joy in unpopular things. Get really close to some ancient sculptures (you can get really, really close) and appreciate the artistry that went into carving translucent lace out of marble.... [more]

MeFi post: in the name of anti-antisemitism, Europe is doomed to repeat its past
But, mx bombastic lowercase pronouncements — ah no, it's my mistake — I completely messed up the editing of my first sentence.

To correct myself: the problem, especially in Germany, but also as described in the article in Britain, is callousness in the response to the killing of Palestinian people and to their relatives.

So yes, I totally undermined what I wanted to pick out of the article: that a lot of the response in Europe is very much... [more]

This is a very tricky article with which to discuss what has, in much of Europe, led to a very callous response to the killing of people in the Israeli invasion of Gaza and to their relatives, and a failure to condemn the war crimes which the IDF are committing, but which have also led to the flipside failure to acknowledge the October 7th attack as something which also causes existential fear and lasting trauma.

As a European who tries to sit with the history of the... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Recommendations for anime or Studio Ghibli-type films
If you haven’t yet seen The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, please consider it. It’s a Ghibli film but from the ‘other one’: it was Isao Takahata’s final film and he really went out with a flourish. The story from an old folk tale may be familiar, but it’s absolutely heartbreaking and rendered with such exquisite beauty. I’ve only watched it once but I think about it often.

So back in my Limo days, I was working at the planning desk and received this call from Vince McMahon's personal assistant, who wanted to schedule a limo to pick him up at International Arrivals to transfer him to the rental car lot to pick up his car.

I explained that this was a waste of time, money, and resources, as the car rental lots at the YVR at the time were directly across the roadway from the International Arrivals concourse. We're talking a zebra-striped,... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How to grieve a sudden pet loss of my beloved kitty efficiently?
I think maybe you just need to remind yourself that you can grieve and still do the stuff you need to get done. The grief will be there, but you don't always have to do anything with it, and you don't have to shove it down, you can just let it hang out in the background. The comedian Rob Delaney, who lost his son (a toddler) to cancer, has said that sometimes, when he was really in the thick of immediate grief, he would remind himself, "It's OK, you'll be sad forever." No group recommendations, but the absolute best way to learn grammar is just to read a lot and pay attention to the syntax of what you read. Language is one of those weird basic skills, like walking or chewing, that's so integral to our function as organisms that we do best just working with our inbuilt learning mechanisms (modeling, practice, imitation) rather than trying to impose a lot of artificial rules or formal instruction.

Ask MeFi post: Does staving off a cold simply prolong it?
Your body needs to fight off the cold virus regardless. You're not really "staving" anything off, you're just making it easier on your immune system to do its job with rest, hydration, etc. The symptoms of any virus are caused by your immune system trying to fight off the infection, and they can be worse if you are unrested, etc.

There's a very simple line of reasoning in support of the idea that it pretty much has to be a net positive:

In the opposite direction, medieval+modern Kilkenny is less train time and a different small town vibe compared to Dublin. There is a castle, caterdral and a nice low-key walk out of town along the river. The tide of tour bus tourists should have ebbed by October. The CobbleStone in Smithfield should be good for trad music every night, it’s walkable or you could take the LUAS

For day trips you can take the DART from Connolly station to Howth, it’s well worth doing the cliff walk around the head, having a pint at the summit and eating fish and chips at Beshoffs in the village.

Newgrange is an interesting prehistoric monument that’s a short drive from Dublin.

(For fellow pedestrians on multi-use trails, I’d recommend glancing behind you when a bike passes to see how many people are in the group, rather than assuming. We also share some responsibility as pedestrians for sharing the trail in the sense of not taking up the entire width of the trail - it’s not just bicyclists who might want to pass, but also joggers, or even faster-paced walkers.)

It's unrealistic to expect someone to lecture someone else about the etiquette of a fairly niche sport

So, the thing is, my understanding is that "on your left" in the context of a paceline is directed primarily at other cyclists, who understand how it's used, not pedestrians.
