What are the most intellectually stimulating podcasts?
What podcasts will make me more intelligent just by listening to them? I enjoy the BBC's "In Our Time", which features serious discussion of historical events and people by academics working in the field, and also quirky, thought-provoking programs like WNYC's "Radio Lab" and "This American Life". I'm not so keen on some of the podcasts I typically get from newspapers that gloss over the surface of a subject with little analysis. What other highbrow podcasts are made by people who really know their shit?
The reason I talk to myself is because I’m the only one whose answers I accept.

Help me rent a villa
Inspired in part by this thread I want to rent a villa in Tuscany. I am reluctant - perhaps needlessly - to do this all over the InterWebs. Does anyone have any experience with an Italian villa renting agent? My ideal answer would be of the form "Contact Signore Agente, he found us a great villa!" But really, any insights from actual experience would be helpful.
Villa in Tuscany
7 friends and I will be traveling to Tuscany in mid-June and are looking for accommodations. We would prefer to stay in a villa as opposed to a hotel. Has anyone spent considerable time in Tuscany who can recommend a place to stay. Price is not really a concern at this point.

What's the percentage of MeFites who have no one nearby? I just moved away from Vancouver (in the interior, Quesnel, to operate my hosting/computer services biz where I actually WANT to live) and suddenly, after updating my long. and lat., I'm all alone!

I need a new automatic coffeemaker
Yes, it's another coffee-related question: Our old Krups 10 cup drip brewer is finally showing its age (it pre-dates our 14 year marriage), and I would like to replace it with something at least as good, if not better. Should be simple, but...
Stewing over the change in season
It's September, and (this morning, at least) it feels like fall is on its way. There's nothing I like more as the weather gets colder than a hearty bowl of stew. Can you suggest some delicious stews I might not have tried before?
The allure of the underground city
Derinkuyu wasn't discovered until 1965, when a resident cleaning the back wall of his cave house broke through a wall and discovered behind it a room that he'd never seen, which led to still another, and another. Eventually, spelunking archeologists found a maze of connecting chambers that descended at least 18 stories and 280 feet beneath the surface, ample enough to hold 30,000 people. [flickr]. [wiki].

I guarantee you will lose to the Busy Beavers. (No, infinity is not allowed, the bigger infinity is a different game.) The author also debunks in very simple terms the recent story that quantum computers perform calculations without being turned on. My first post and disclaimer: I know the author from our mutual field of quantum information.
Recipes and Tips for Real Popcorn
How do you make popcorn? Specifically old fashioned, non microwave stove top popcorn. I really want great salty buttered popcorn that doesn't come from a bag.

How can I preserve and display a tablecloth?
For at least 25 years, my grandmother had a table cloth which every person who visited her house signed, and their signature was embroidered onto the cloth. Now my family is looking for a way to preserve and display it. Any cool ideas?

Format and topics to cover in a business plan?
I'm looking for ~$10,000 to start a simple business and need to write a business plan. Essentially, I have the best price and the best quality for a new tech gadget than no one is seriously marketing in the US. I'm trying to figure out the business plan's formatting, what topics to cover, questions to answer, information to include. Any samples or suggestions are much appreciated.

brain story
Excellent BBC Brain Story series available online. One of the best TV series on psychology and neuroscience ever produced, the BBC's Brain Story, is available on public bittorrent servers for download. It is a six part series covering virtually every area of contemporary neuropsychology, including the major researchers, discoveries, techniques and even many of the patients who have been the subjects of classic case studies that have helped us understand the curious effects of brain injury.
CreateSpace, an Amazon on-demand self-publishing service, inks deal with National Archives for 100,000's of public domain films
CreateSpace is the new name of Amazon's on-demand self-publishing service for the super long tail of books, audio CD's and film DVD/Blue-ray. Products automatically get an ISBN number and are listed on Amazon.com, including "Search Inside" for books. The National Archives and CreateSpace will be publishing movies from its collection of over 200,000 public domain films, raising some provocative copyright issues.
just plane furniture
Ever had a yen for a table made from jet engine turbine blades or a desk fashioned from a wing or a cowling? Giancarlo de Astis and Moto Art are two high-end design firms that are creating eye catching furniture and functional art from scavenged airplane parts. You can see their work and the work of others in the aviation art community at InterFlight Studio. Or do-it-yourself-ers in the crowd might just prefer a Field Guide to Aircraft Boneyards.
The World's Most Perfect Bacon
I have to assume the only reason you're reading this right now and not busy home curing & eating bacon is because nobody has shown you how. Let's fix that.

A million dollars ain't what it used to be...
In Silicon Valley, Millionaires Who Don't Feel Rich
[NYTimes Link] Mr. Kremen estimated his net worth at $10 million. That puts him firmly in the top half of 1 percent among Americans, according to wealth data from the Federal Reserve, but barely in the top echelons in affluent towns like Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Atherton. So he logs 60- to 80-hour workweeks because, he said, he does not think he has nearly enough money to ease up.
Go Big Or Go Little
The wife and I just 'committed' to a pre-construction, 2200 sq/ft townhouse in Raleigh. We put down 2k and it will be finished in Mar-Apr 2008. After upgrades, the place will be about 275k. We will most likely stay in this place 5-8 years. My question is about financing.

The Young Ones
The Young Ones
[TV-Links. Previously 1, 2] "A mad, helter-skelter, rude, awesomely violent, unpredictable, swaggering, staggering, joyously infantile, exhilarating steamroller of a sitcom, The Young Ones provided the breakthrough for the new generation of aggressive and forthright 'alternative' comedians." (I recommend Summer Holiday and Bambi.) Lots of great and soon-to-be-great guests. Look for Emma Thompson in Bambi as one of "the posh kids."
