Music that later makes you go, "Hey yeah, I never noticed that!"

Pop-rock songs with unusual/unique constructions, structures, patterns, tempo changes, time signature changes, instrumental/vocal interplay, etc... Stuff you probably don't realize upon a casual first listen. And not necessarily something obvious like "multiple songs in one" (eg "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"), or songs with no chorus. The only three examples I can think of right ... songs that have a subtle "trick" to it, that play with the very nature of songs. Any Beatles examples would be excellent. I'll try to give ...

Help me to appreciate the Rolling Stones.

Help me to appreciate the Rolling Stones. I love classic rock and I practically worship Led Zeppelin and the Beatles, but I've never really delved into the Stones. I like music that is quirky and keeps me guessing, whose harmonies or arrangements take me by surprise. When this doesn't happen, I like music that is just unquestionably awesome (for any reason). Where should I begin (album-wise) ...

Dark Beatles Covers

Help me find interesting, dark Beatles covers. I'm looking for good Beatles covers done in goth style (I'm thinking VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk here). I'd be happy with any that are somewhat dark in nature, though. Bonus points for Norwegian Wood.

Maybe I'm Cold Turkey Imagine My Sweet Boogaloo On The Run

Help me find the best albums The Beatles never made. I recently dove headfirst into the solo careers of the four Beatles and find myself idly assembling the best of their solo material into makeshift Beatles records. This feels like a pretty common reaction to their solo material and I'd love see what others have come up with. Especially if they really put their research into it. i.e. "Mull ...

Jaron Lanier's comment on the Rite of Spring

This question is about Jaron Lanier's comments on Stravinsky's Rite of Spring in his book You Are Not a Gadget. On p. 127, Lanier says: It's easy to forget the role technology has played in producing the most powerful waves of musical culture. Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, composed in 1912, would have been a lot harder to play, at least in tempo and in tune, on the instruments that had existed ... what a small number of musicians could do for a dance hall with the aid of amplification. The Beatles' recordings were in part a rapid reconnaissance ...

Beatles Bootlegs?

What are the most interesting Beatles bootlegs? How do you get them? Are there any interesting "legit" bootlegs? For years I've been reading about bootleg recordings of the Beatles in studio. These aren't the "unplugged" recordings, or alternate takes that sound more or less the same as the ones we've all heard a million times on the records. They're slow versions of songs that ...

What audio format for remastered Beatles listening on iPod only??

What audio format would you rip the recently remastered Beatles albums in for optimum iPod listening? Let's say you've got the recently released Beatles in Mono (or Stereo). Let's say you have to use iTunes and you only listen on your iPod, via Sony headphones or the car stereo. And let's say storage isn't an issue. What format would you rip them in? MP3 192kbps? AAC iTunes Plus? Apple Lossless? ...

Cover songs reworked in different time signatures.

Looking for cover songs that have been reworked in a different time signature. I got the idea for this question when I came across this. The song you hear this band performing in the video is played in 3s (in a 6/8 feel), but on the album, the song is in 4/4 time. So I wondered to myself, there must have been bands/artists in the past decade or two that have covered (famous) songs, but took the ... signature. Youtube links would be great. 70s~90s pop/rock preferred. Would love to hear some Beatles songs redone in different time signatures. ...

Goodall Music

British composer and TV presenter Howard Goodall presents a documentary exploring the influences and theory behind the music of The Beatles, and the transformation of their sound over their recording career. Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 on Youtube. But that's not all... A fascinating program, to be sure. Howard Goodall's other programs are equally interesting: His series How Music Works examined ...

This little homunculus

London’s Royal Court Theatre has made this spring a Wallace Shawn season. In addition to showing Shawn’s cult movies “My Dinner with Andre” (1981) and “Vanya on 42nd Street” (1994), the theatre has staged his 1990 one-man show, “The Fever” (with the estimable Clare Higgins taking on Shawn’s role), his 1985 play “Aunt Dan and Lemon,” and Shawn’s first new play in more than a decade, “Grasses of a ... The Royal Court, one of the most influential theatres in Europe, is doing for Shawn what the Beatles did for Little Richard: rediscovering for a new ...

Music suggestions (a pop song?) for a wedding recessional, please!

I'm getting married in 3 weeks (exciting!) and my fiance and I are looking for a cute (indie?) pop song that can be played by a string quartet as we walk back down the aisle together. We want it to be upbeat - so far we've been considering Oasis "Wonderwall", some Beatles tunes - "All you need is love"?, and maybe even our first dance song, Peter Bjorn and John's "Paris ...

60's MusicFilter:

Help me make a playlist w/ 60's music? Ok, I'll be more specific - I like some of the british invasion stuff, some soul or funk and maybe psychadelic... not to knock the Beach Boys or the Monkees, but I'm not looking for that kind of stuff. I was born in 1964 and I'm thinking of things I might have heard in the last 40 years but not top-40 songs. Maybe some not-so-overplayed stuff, Stones, Who, ... , Traffic - but not to leave out some more obscure stuff (Electric Prunes? Zombies?) I know ALL the Beatles songs, so no need to add those. And it ...

Earliest non-literal and non-"The" band name?

What was the earliest band with a name other than "The [Whatever]s" or a derivation of a person's actual name? I can't think of any popular band from the 50's that wasn't something like "The Del Shannons" or "Buddy Holly and the Crickets." And in the 60's, it was still pretty straightforward: The Beatles, The Beach Boys. So what was the first band with a more ...
