Ask MeFi post: Things you were wrong about - 2021 Science Edition
Babies have object permanence younger than we thought. When you hide an object, it's not that they think the object has vanished from existence. They just don't have the executive functioning and motor planning abilities to pick up the blanket/cup/pillow/whatever you hid the object behind, so they start crying. You monster.

MeFi post: I went to the office for the first time.
I have a friend who's being forced back to the office. She requested some accommodations as her chronic respiratory (and other) ailments put her at a high infection risk.

She asked for Plexiglass barriers around her desk. They put up a pipe-and-drape made out of PVC tubing and literal dollar-store shower curtains. She asked for a door; they put up a rope barrier. Apparently they don't know how air works and subscribe to the Les Nessman school of architecture. So now... [more]

My sister in-law recently came back from visiting her sister in Florida. She went to Clearwater for a couple days while there, and was appalled that some of the restaurants and bars she was dining/drinking in were short-staffed. She's telling me this story and I say "The restaurants should just pay more." She looked at me with disgust and grumbled something about how lazy the people there are.

busy not wanting people talking about guillotining them on Twitter -- that's the only explanation that I can think of, a PR backlash. Either that, or it's a Ray Smuckles-level power move to impress whoever they canceled the flight for.

“Many people, all with the best of intentions, have said that if I walk away from UNC, I will have let those who opposed me win. But I do not want to win someone else’s game. MeFi post: The story of Chuck E. Cheese
You wanna know the real story about Chuckie? That's right, no middle initial, and "Cheese" ain't his last name. We spent a lot of time together on the cell block, Chuckie and me, just shooting the shit to pass the time. He said that he was safer on the inside, after what he did and who he ratted on, until we noticed a couple new fish that looked harder than anyone already there; after a while, you get an instinct for guys that get sent up the river just to take out someone inside. Well,... [more]

Holy cow Felleisen's website makes my skin crawl. I think it hits almost every single square of the white male martyr bingo card.

It's kind of perfect that the pretty straightforward "clean" design is marred by a sidebarred screed against diversity efforts, a boxed Orwell quote that is clearly intended to be pro-confederate-monument, and a fucking Dilbert cartoon. This guy is the platonic ideal of an asshole.

The article quotes Judson Brewer but it leaves out what I think is his most interesting research result, which is that the reward value of any choice is evaluated by a piece of the brain that unless we specifically pay attention to the detailed experience of the consequences of that choice just assigns the same anticipated reward value as it did last time the same choice came up.

In other words, some of what we do ends up being... [more]

I highly recommend the books "The Antidote" and "4000 Thousand Weeks" by Oliver Burkeman. They are anti-productivity books in a way, and one thing they discuss is how we can't "manage" our way into better productivity because the drivers are emotional. We're not procrastinating or failing to find time to exercise because of a personal organizational failing.

I did my undergrad at 18, went back for one grad degree in my early 30s, and am about to go back for another in my early 40s. I'd recommend you spend time between now and the start of your program practicing being a student. Watch academic lectures on YouTube and take notes while doing so. Find background books in your subject and start reading aggressively now. In the Hacker News discussion I found this 2019 presentation the developer gave about the app and how he built it. Some details:

It's all Javascript. No other languages compiled to JS. Just ES5 Javascript, no Babel. Made without frameworks. Only 1150 lines of CSS. He cares a lot about performance, including rendering at 60fps. So he uses WebGL for graphics acceleration. He wrote his own Javascript minifier/obfuscator.

He also wrote his own... [more]

Wow, Foci, thank you for posting this. This is almost triggering to me.
In my opinion, IDEO is a huge used brown bag of hot air. I cannot think of any positive aspect to the business, and I hope it will be one of the organisations that die in the coming revolution. It is no surprise to me that it also has a toxic work culture, because the toxicity comes with the foundational lie. I think that toxic workplace culture has spread to a lot of design companies and design schools across the globe.
Now, for those... [more]

I worked for IDEO in a support role in the mid-to-late 1990s, and it was absolutely a culture of entitled white boys. It was a open secret at the time that the women who worked in the admin roles in the company HQ were looked at as a pool of "girlfriends" for the executives. In my office, there were no female designers at all and only a couple of female engineers, and absolutely no people of color. One of my co-workers was reprimanded for sexual harassment, but not terminated. I have... [more]
