In case anyone else has to do this at some point in their life: you can typically do this with a small garbage can instead, thus avoiding worrying about the plastic or bag hitting water, while still generally containing the sample.

They gave me a couple of things that resembled those biodegradable fibre takeout containers. Except contoured for placement on a toilet seat. Saved me having to DIY it.

Then I got into a cab with... [more]

Automating stool analysis to make it easier and more routine would be a lot of good; the topic reminds me of when "fecal transplants" (for medical application of microbiome effects) first started getting pop-sci news articles. Easily the best episode of the series so far because it didn't just lean into the premise, but jumped in with hella enthusiasm.

The episode wasn't very deep, but Thor tends not to be so it works. Instead, there's just constant train of jokes and gags, which I'm gonna list out, because it's my day off and I don't wanna get outta bed.

First off: Anything that opens with Darcy is gonna, even if it's only Darcy. It's such a good character that takes... [more]

For what it's worth, Infinity Stones not working outside their home universe isn't just a Loki series thing, there's well established comics precedents for it too. But the nature of Marvel's What If? means that rules like that are made to be broken.

Only semi related to that, I feel like the scriptwriters missed an opportunity when The Watcher's "happily ever after" summation got interrupted. The line he says comes this... [more]

FanFare post: Movie: Kate
I enjoyed watching this even if it didn’t live up to the inevitable comparisons to John Wick and Atomic Blonde. I feel like the movie hamstrung itself by casting a very charismatic actress in the lead but rarely letting her be charismatic. See Fargo Season 3 for an example of Mary Elizabeth Winstead going on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge without having to adopt Wick-like stoicism.

Still, a fun watch, and to... [more]

FanFare post: Ted Lasso: Beard After Hours
I loved this episode.
On the Football is Life podcast, Jason Snell has talked occasionally about how it seems Beard is in his own wacky, surreal show that we only see glimpses of that intersects with Ted Lasso. This was an episode of that show.

I, too, am completely incompetent after a single poor night's sleep. This show is so relatable.

I did not understand at first that Guillermo was being sent back to their ancestral lands - I thought he was going back to Staten Island to get more soil, because why would they have brought their whole soil supply to this hotel? - so I did guffaw at him in his middle seat to Heathrow. But yeah, the rest of his trip was fairly dull.

I liked that... [more]

MeFi post: Make your cat the centre of attention during family meals
Apparently he fell from the ceiling directly in front of their young dog with absolutely no explanation, she lost her goddamn mind and started to bark in confusion and bewilderment, and suddenly they had this totally random cat with weird giant, wobbly eyes that shouted indignantly when he fell on his ass in their house.

Then when we came rushing over in dismay to collect him, we had to admit that there were two cats missing, not one. They asked the... [more]

After moving, our cats were briefly devoid of furniture because it took three weeks for incompetent movers to disgorge our stuff. I have now bought my cats a small cardboard yacht, pirate ship, whale, and also a four-leveled cardboard tower upon which to climb, not to mention a small army of houseplants I am growing up for them to chew upon. The cardboard stuff is actually getting significant use, especially if I go in there and play with a wand toy and run the lure into the little hidey holes.... [more]

That enchanted forest kitty sanctuary is really something, but okay, I have had a flash of insight: build an enchanted forest human sanctuary and the cats will use it. Like, make sure that the platforms are strong enough for humans to sit on them and integrate some kind of weird Victorian conversation chair and I bet the cats would love it.

My feeling is that cats don't like purpose-built cat things because they can tell that humans/other animals... [more]

When you don’t want to invite your cat to the table, you can use a lid to cover the hole.

Yeah I am pretty sure this bit of the copy was written by someone who has never interacted with a cat. "Uninvited" is not a status cats recognize.
