FanFare post: What If...?: What If... Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?
(Not actually Werner Herzog, Marvel reached out to him, but he declined).

So, this was all for the Hulk Hogan joke, right?

Bound to be the best MCU holiday season thing since Hawkeye.
What about the Guardians of the Galaxy kidnapping Kevin Bacon?

MeFi post: Pounded in the butt by the Texas Library Association
Wasn't it the reason the Sad Puppies added him to their slate eight years ago? They thought he was one of them, only to find out he's the real deal.

I think it would be more accurate to say that the Sad Puppies thought that Tingle's work was ridiculous and that it was would be embarrassing to the Hugos to have it on the short list. But, yeah, it would be fair to say that backfired for them, and it ended up being a huge boon to Tingle's career.

> but because his mask is fun and zany, they worry that they will be perceived as unserious and getting trolled

that's the thing about dr. tingle on the whole, right? he's saying something dead serious and super interesting, but wrapped in a package that refuses to invite you to take it seriously, that repels seriousness, that forces seriousness to bead up and roll off like water on teflon.

The only way this ends well for the TLA is if they give Chuck Tingle a parade float.

And I only say this because I really want Chuck Tingle to get a parade float.

In this episode, they both solved a mystery and rewrote history. That tracks.

If we're referencing ongoing continuity gags, the animated version of The Tick made a point of showing the Moon with 'CHA' carved into it, following our hero's partial foiling of Chairface Chippendale's evil plan to carve his name into the lunar surface.

EmpressCallipygos: Yes, it felt very similar to Midnight.

It was a good little puzzle that all snapped together satisfyingly in the end.

I did notice: the ship's pilot was the one who actually saved the day, three years ago. Then the Doctor and Donna blundered in accidentally, and almost gave the edge-of-the-universe monsters a way to escape.

I also loved the design of the rusty robot.

Maybe a nod to Marvin's look in the movie version of HHG2TG? He had a bit of Marvin's hangdog personality about him too.

FanFare post: Doctor Who: The Star Beast
Bleeding Cool has some pages from the original comics story here.

BTW, I'm in with the new Tardis.

I hated it - far too antiseptic and lacking in character. Who wants to explore time and space in an Apple Store?

When I saw Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons in the opening credits I was all “Huh. Comics guys getting television work. Good for them.”

When we see the aliens, I thought “These look awfully familiar.”

It took me an absurdly long time to realize that the plot of this story was the same as the comic of the first American printing of Doctor Who from the eighties that I actually owned as a teenager. My first introduction to DW, full circle.

Tennant. Oh dear, I just realized that. Destined since birth to play the Tenth Doctor.

Sadly, not since birth - "Tennant" is a stage name. His birth name is David McDonald. But the actors' union will not allow two people to have the exact same name, so when he joined Actors' Equity at age 16 he was told there already was a David McDonald on their member list and so he had to pick a new name - and he'd been reading an article about The Pet... I missed Ten. Tennant. Oh dear, I just realized that. Destined since birth to play the Tenth Doctor.

I enjoyed the episode and the return of the Doctor and Donna dynamic.

There is a sort of thematic thing going on here with the split room? Wasn't there an episode with Wilf stuck in a chamber when the Tenth regenerated? I was thinking that glass wall was just a stupid trope, but now I'm thinking (it's that and) it's RTD doing a... [more]

Danish’s end was a rare sour note for me. Roy’s right, he should have been smart enough to know what was about to happen, especially after revealing Danish was behind the debate embarrassment.

Seeing the windmill from the fantasy (?) on the ranch suggests Dot knows Linda is buried there but has blocked it out.

You know, I really love the database of dad jokes, but I am really deeply moved by the existence of the parent (pun not intended) site.

I mean: parenting is hard. We all know how much garbage mothers get, and how hard it is to juggle all the things moms are asked to do. But fatherhood is often, in some circles, minimized; some dads end up feeling like their only value is as a paycheck, or worse - they have no value at all.

To have an official... [more]

but they mention that dad jokes get kids to think about language.

They even get me to think about language. The dad jokes of my youth don’t quite work for my kids, and in some cases I think it’s because the puns don’t quite work any more in their vernacular, which has shifted over decades and continents. Example:

Q: What’s E.T. short for?

A: Because he’s got little legs.

There's a fatherhood.gov billboard that just went up near my house in the last few weeks. Their association with a database of dad jokes will only deepen the discussion we had at dinner earlier this week: whether dad jokes constitute a form of emotional abuse, or are a positive force for children's development. Research publications were cited on both sides.

Which is good, because only using one side would be a waste of paper.

Just this afternoon as I was waiting at a bus stop, an older woman approached me (for reference, my mom turned eighty this month and this old doll appeared to have a decade on her).

She asked me, “Do you know what kind of driver doesn’t need a license?” When I admitted I did not, she said, “A screwdriver,” and then sat down, looking quite pleased.

Justice has done a lot of good music videos. The one that's stuck with me through 15 years is the collaboration with Romain Gavras for Stress. Is training a neural network on publically accessible media a different "right" than training your own brain? I'm not sure, and I'm not sure I trust a Jury to decide either.

Absolutely it is because humans, who can think with their brains, are different from machines, who cannot. I hope this is helpful.
