The ellipse is an example of a curve which doesn't have any inscribed regular n-gons for n > 4 (unless it is a circle). That is because all the vertices of a regular n-gon lie on a common circle, and a circle and ellipse intersect in at most four points.

No need for tricky stuff... just hire vampire camera operators using vampire cameras.

So the reason nobody used to do this (before digital) is because in order to pull it off, camera viewfinders need mirrors, which.... So they'd have to do it VERY old school, where the viewfinder wasn't actually using the lens. Hmm, just by complete chance I've spent the past several days messing around with just exactly this. The nice thing is, it's a system that compensates for your hearing but also for your exact system and headphones/speakers, too - and the end result is, my $20 or $40 headphones end up sounding as good as $200 or $400 models.

I had a good talk with my therapist this week that relates, perhaps, to our conversation here.

My partner will often go into panic mode because they're running late, which inevitably leads them to run even more late. For years, I've responded by getting sucked into that panic too, which just compounds the problem.

I got to see metafilter user Cold Chef yesterday when he eulogized his best friend, my nephew. Can you imagine giving the eulogy for your best friend? (Perhaps you have done that.) Cold Chef told me before the service that he had talked to Jessamyn who had told him "You've been training for this your whole life". He spoke for about 30 minutes; he was funny and warm and gave a marvelous tribute to the deceased with many stories that I hadn't known.

Tiny nit: The prospect in the video linked in the article is to use virus (can’t remember the plural of virus) to kill bacteria, not vampire bacteria used to kill other bacteria. Phage therapy has been a thing for decades but not in the US under the FDA.

My association with this song is always gonna be this MTV/Lineage 2 music video, which happened in the extremely brief window in which I was the L2 community manager for North America. It was in no way my marketing win - I have no idea how it happened, actually - but we considered it a huge marketing win.
