MeFi post: Your calculus textbook lied to you.
For folks interested in the current math/calculus education issues that have been raised in this thread, I highly recommend looking into the research on students’ concept images for limits (Part 2, Part 3) and other key calculus concepts (links give a reasonable introductory overview with lots of citations to get you started).... MeFi post: 3Blue1Brown explains topology
The ellipse is an example of a curve which doesn't have any inscribed regular n-gons for n > 4 (unless it is a circle). That is because all the vertices of a regular n-gon lie on a common circle, and a circle and ellipse intersect in at most four points.

Goddammit cortex I lost all of yesterday to I Am Future and will probably lose today to it, too. It's charming and pleasant and repetitive in the good way, although I may yet turn the coziness slider up because I simply can't be arsed to deal with slugs eating my lettuce.

MeFi post: Invisible Cameras
No need for tricky stuff... just hire vampire camera operators using vampire cameras.
So the reason nobody used to do this (before digital) is because in order to pull it off, camera viewfinders need mirrors, which.... So they'd have to do it VERY old school, where the viewfinder wasn't actually using the lens. And that's great if you don't mind getting shots close to right, but unless you're a Kubrick von Helsing, it's not clear what the shots will... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How do hearing test results translate to a graphic equalizer?
Hmm, just by complete chance I've spent the past several days messing around with just exactly this. The nice thing is, it's a system that compensates for your hearing but also for your exact system and headphones/speakers, too - and the end result is, my $20 or $40 headphones end up sounding as good as $200 or $400 models.
- Simplest & easiest: Just turn up the treble a little until it sounds good to you. That will honestly get you 90% of the way there with 0.... [more]

That's kind of how Sudoku Assistenten works. It tries to solve using standard human-known patterns, like pairs or X-wings or Skyscrapers, and gives it a 1-10 ranking depending on the degree of difficulty:1 Very Easy - (just elimination)
2 Easy - Single Candidates
3 Average - Line vs Box/Box vs Line single

I had a good talk with my therapist this week that relates, perhaps, to our conversation here.
My partner will often go into panic mode because they're running late, which inevitably leads them to run even more late. For years, I've responded by getting sucked into that panic too, which just compounds the problem.
I'm trying to practice (and I don't think this is the phrase my therapist used) emotional detachment when they're panicking... [more]

Tiny nit: The prospect in the video linked in the article is to use virus (can’t remember the plural of virus) to kill bacteria, not vampire bacteria used to kill other bacteria. Phage therapy has been a thing for decades but not in the US under the FDA.
The article is about a small virus that attaches itself to the neck of a larger bacteria killing virus. Thus the vampire virus. Virus to virus vampirism, not virus to bacteria vampirism.

My suggestion above (the Organization for Human Interaction Online) was actually not a joke (the acronym was a joke, as was the slogan that occurred to me later - "We want to do right but not right now") mostly because a broader organization name and a mission slightly broader than "administer Metafilter.com" may be something that the community wants in the longer term. I came across MetaFilter in early 2001, just before I turned 20, first tried to join in 2002, and finally got in about a year and a half later. During that time I’ve lived in three different countries, six different towns and cities, and have had to find new social nets of my own. But MetaFilter’s always been there, an island village I carry with me around the world. There are dozens of MeFites, even hundreds, whose... [more]
