Can I just give her a letter that I like her within just a few weeks?

Okay, I have known this girl for almost a month now and the moment I first saw her, I decided that she's the one for the rest of my life (from a guy who never really thought of marriage). It's physical attraction at first but she thinks I am kind of a creep as I once tried to say that she's the only girl that I felt talking this way. She just left off saying she will look into other stuff while her colleague interrupted. Right now, I feel much more of committing with her all along and not looking for a relationship as she mentioned that she's just out of a long term relationship. I may find another girl who might like me in turn but I am of the opinion that I can give her my best. Right now, I am thinking of writing a letter what profession I am in, talking about her to my parents, my job/salary, plans etc and ask for friendship first as she doesn't seem interested at all. Is it a good way to wait for another couple of months and give it or is it rightnow or not at all? Ohh...she also doesn't talk to me now much whenever I try go towards her. It's hard.... Any other suggestions?

Things were wonderful once

1. Tin Huey T-Shirt. 2. A silk-screened poster from the Sept. 22, 2000, Mary Timony (of Helium) concert in Oberlin, Ohio. 3. "Crazy Rhythms" by the Feelies (on white vinyl). 4. A big-ass dining room table. 5. The Futon. 6. One audio MiniDisc of the Black Keys' first live performance, July 2002. 7. 7. One black-and-white photo of Patrick and me, taken in 2003, at Apple Studios. A marriage, and divorce, in seven mementos.

Moving out of one's own head.

I live in my own head too much. I over-analyze my own feelings/thoughts as well as the actions of others. How do I overcome this?

The acrylic...it burns!

I'm trying to teach myself to knit/crochet and have found that one of the major barriers to learning is the yarn - acrylic yarn to be exact. It irritates my skin.

Help! I think I am slightly obsessed with clothing. I feel like I have nothing to wear. (But my closet is full of lovely things!). How can I have a more healthy, less anxious attitude to dressing, particularly for the workplace?

Five t-shirts that you probably shouldn't wear

Few things are more American than t-shirts and pissing people off for no reason. Vice Magazine designed six wildly offensive t-shirts and managed to get all of them printed. (nsfw)

September-issue reviews: Covers of fashion mags dissected

Sarah Nicole Prickett, who, as an interesting fashion writer, is something of a rarity, reviews the covers of September fashion issues for Toronto’s Eye Weekly (Part 1; Part 2). It is, on the whole, a sorry lot. Just for instance: “The September issue of British Vogue stars Kate Moss, for no other reason than six months have passed and she is still not dead or, worse, fat.... The level of fail can’t be expressed even in Caps Lock.”

What are the most intellectually stimulating podcasts?

What podcasts will make me more intelligent just by listening to them? I enjoy the BBC's "In Our Time", which features serious discussion of historical events and people by academics working in the field, and also quirky, thought-provoking programs like WNYC's "Radio Lab" and "This American Life". I'm not so keen on some of the podcasts I typically get from newspapers that gloss over the surface of a subject with little analysis. What other highbrow podcasts are made by people who really know their shit?

What "Rules for Life" should I pass on to my 15 year old brother?

So I'm putting together a collection of "Rules for Life" as a gift for my 15 year old little brother, that I'll likely put together on one of those one-off vanity book publishery things... and I'm looking for some suggestions as to some good rules. Looking for real advice for obscure situations one might find themselves in, great quotes that can inspire someone to live their life better, serious thoughts that people have realized later in their life that they wish someone had told them previously, and a good dose of humor. Cliche as it is, Mary Schmich's "Wear Sunscreen" column gives a decent examples of the general tone I want for most of it. So.... What else should I put in the book?

Time Vacuum (or Productivity Fail) Web Sites

I'm putting together a list of some of my favourite time-vacuum websites. What I mean by that is a website that you can visit and then lose half your day to, by the sheer amount of great stuff to read, watch, play, listen to, learn, etc etc. They could be news pages, or a site where there is always something new to see, or maybe just a database that you can lose hours mining for interesting information. I'm sure we all have stuff like this in our bookmarks, so I'm turning to the hive mind for help to expand my list of really interesting sites.

It sounds so pretty!

Hailee Steinfeld as Hattie Ross in True Grit (2010) and Megan Fallows as Anne Shirley in the Anne of Green Gables series speak almost exactly the same. And it sounds so great. What is the origin of this method of speaking? Elocution lessons? Having parents in the theatre? What?

John Hinde

Our True Intent Is All For Your Delight: The John Hinde Butlin's Photographs "Long viewed only as a master of kitsch Hinde is now recognised, albeit posthumously, as a peerless social documentarian. Dazzling in their their colour intensity and strange clarity.... Visionary, Wonderful." Sean O'Hagan, The Observer, London "Extraordinary...the combination of aesthetics and promotion produced something that bypasses documentary and approaches an arresting British surrealism". David Jays, Financial Times "These phenomenal photographs...a cacophony of colour...Despite and because of their artifice, John Hinde's picture postcards are endlessly fascinating, exposing social trends, sartorial aberrations and a particular photographic vision. A delightful book". The Art Book. Large collection of his other work at the John Hinde Collection

Dust off your frying pan and hide your wallet!

Eating healthy on a budget isn't just for hipsters on food stamps. While some have called Michael Pollan and Mark Bittman's ideas about cooking and eating "elitist," there are many cooks who are smart enough to know that cooking at home is the only way to eat healthy on a budget. While Jamie Oliver pledges to give all school children "10 recipes that will save their lives," almost anyone on any budget can change the way they shop for, prepare, and think about food.

It seems so desperate!

I've recently (sadly, I might say) started watching Storage Wars on A & E. Outside of the slightly gameshow aspect of the program, can anyone tell me anything about buying and flipping defaulted storage units? It seems fascinating beyond the trashy staged feel of the TV show.

Help me find a hobby!

I am looking for a creative hobby. I get home from work, maybe go to the gym, cook, and then am free for about 3 hours. I want to do something creative or with my hands, but that doesn't take too much intense skill or learning. I already knit, but sort of knitted myself out and want something else. I used to make jewelry which was really fun, and something along those lines could work. Any ideas?

Mad Props

There was a typewriter repairman in North Hollywood, California. He couldn’t believe it when all of a sudden someone deposited 24 vintage typewriters on his doorstep and said, “Make them look new.” He probably hadn’t had that much work in the last 25 years. He was probably just about ready to hang up the “Going out of business” sign and cursing the arrival of the laptop computer when all of a sudden here I come with 24 typewriters. The Collectors Weekly interviews Scott Buckwald, propmaster for Mad Men.

Rules never stop coming at you, they just get infinitely more nuanced.

You think it would be really fun to have sex with me. Because, I think you can tell from my posts, I’ll do anything. But maybe you can also tell from my posts that it’s a little bit weird. Because you know that I’ll say anything, too, but sometimes, I make you cringe.

I think I’m that way in bed, too.
