Very soft science fiction/speculative fiction recommendations (with a few restrictions)

"These youths wearing their togas halfway down their legs"

My father says that a decline in morals and standards is a particularly modern occurrence. What argument, quotes or sources can I use to persuade him that people have been complaining of societal decline for thousands of years?

Stuck in the dreaded “friend zone”!

So as fate would have it, I am sharing an apartment with a girl that I am very attracted to. And now it seems as if I've been perma-friended. (For the sake of discussion, lets forgo the “dating roommates is a bad idea” discussion.)

Letting go of God: Help me deal with my atheism and the five stages of grief. I'm in the fourth stage now.

Please give advice on how to accept my atheism, let go of God and the need for one, how to get over the fourth stage of grief/letting go (depression), and how to find my passion for life again!

I need a specific CMS that allows each user to edit one part of a page.

I need a page of bios integrated into a WordPress site. I would like to give each person the ability to update his own bio without letting him mess with other people's bios. It would be awesome if the list was alphabetized.

What clever relationship "hacks" have you come up with? I'm looking to build up my mental catalogue of examples of non-obvious solutions to relationship difficulties. Help me think out of the box better in the future!

Here Comes Another Song

"Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles, "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies, "Here Comes My Baby" by Cat Stevens. Besides the name, these songs have some similar musical qualities. Any other songs fit (even if the name doesn't)?

Total Crud Face Universe and Galaxy

I am obsessed with artist&writer Lynda Barry, and don't believe she has any peer or equal in the world of comics. Prove me wrong; who else would I love?

Good stuff in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn?

Moving to Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, a couple of blocks northeast of Grand Army Plaza. We're already excited about being near the Brooklyn Museum, the Library, and Prospect Park... but we're looking for neighborhood tips on the little things: good cheap food and drink, best grocery, best coffee, least shady laundromat, what to check out, what to avoid, et cetera. Help us out!

A filing system for my electronic money?

I'd like an online savings account (no minimums, no fees) that lets me divide savings into 'virtual funds' to save for things like trips, a computer, emergencies, etc. Does anyone know of one?

Recommend anonymous, frank, journal-like blogs.

Can anyone recommend any brutally honest, diary/journal blogs? Ones where people talk about most aspects of their lives: emotions, friendships, relationships, sex, hobbies, politics. Ones where the posts are so private that they can only be kept secret, or shared with strangers.

I Need a New Big Think Book!

I need a new "big think" book! I just finished Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, and I loved his other books as well. I've read everything Jared Diamond has published (Collapse, Guns, Germs & Steel, The Third Chimpanzee etc.) I like books that stretch your brain and reveal the hidden factors in life, the world and society.

Please scare me.

I want a book that I have to put into the freezer. I've read this question, which was looking for thrillers, and this post looking for short stories, but I can't seem to find a thread looking for scary, engrossing novels where supernatural is okay.

10,000 Hours of Reading

I'm fascinated with books that deal with the social psychological conscious like Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers/Blink/Tipping Point or Stephen Dubner/Steven Levitt's Freakonomics. I'd love to read more books in the same vein. Any choice authors or books I should check out?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman in possession of a manuscript must be in want of reference materials.

Can you please recommend some books on daily life, home life, and general society in the UK and the US in the 1840s - 1880s for me? I already have What Jane Austen Ate, and What Charles Dickens Knew and An Elegant Madness. It doesn't have to be specifically on daily life- creative nonfiction like Larson's The Devil in the White City or Johnson's The Ghost Map are awesome, too.

Help me make sense of hdtv technology

I'm looking to buy my first HDTV. I know little to nothing about technology, and it seems that all of the discussions and guides online are geared towards very savvy technophiles looking to spend big bucks on a very precise level of viewing and audio perfection that I neither need nor want. Please help me understand what all of these weird terms mean and what I actually need in order to watch tv and vhs/dvd videos.
