Hey, you got Madonna's input, so you might as well get Charlie Daniels'.

See? Some people DO get all their ideas from the Falwells & Robertsons of the world. They're not quite so harmless as some of you would have us believe.

Some of our music is fit for nothing but a garbage can

As opposed to morally uplifting music, like say...
"The Devil Went Down to Georgia."

Well I disagree with a lot of what Charlie Daniels said, but parts of it I agree with it. If you actually read through the whole thing you might find one or two things you agreed with too. We need to retaliate with justice, not vengeance. That's the difference between barbarism and civilized behavior. We could just turn Afghanistan into glass. Unlike our enemies, we know that could hurt us as much as them. There's better ways to go about doing it and so far sounds like Bush's taking the high road.

Madonna needs to cut back on her "personal notes" and quit using her stage as a bully pulpit. If she wants to get politically involved beyond encouraging people to vote, she should get into politics herself. Let people vote for her. I agree and disagree with parts of what she said, but coming from her mouth it's just simply laughable.

I liked the fact that last week the media was mostly following people like Colin Powell, or getting statements from the common man, and entertainers like Charlie Daniels and Madonna were rarely being interviewed. It was a refreshing change.

Well the eagle's been flyin' slow
And the flag's been flyin' low
And a lot of people sayin' that America's fixin' to fall
Well speakin' just for me
And some people from Tennessee
We've got a thing or two to tell you all
This lady may have stumbled
But she aint never fell
And if the Russians don't believe that
They can all go straight to hell
We're gonna put her feet back
On the path of righteousness and then
God bless America again

And you never did think
That it ever would happen again
You never did think
That we'd ever get together again
( We da*& sure fooled you )
Yeah, we're walkng real proud
And we're talkin' real loud again ( In America )
You never did think
That it ever would happen again

From The Sound up in Long Island
Out to San Francisco Bay
And everthing that's in between them is our own
And we may have done a little bit
Of fightin' amongst ourselves
But you outside people best leave us alone
'Cause we'll all stick together
And you can take that to the bank
That's the cowboys and the hippies
And the rebels and the yanks
You just go and lay your hand
On a Pittsburgh Steelers' fan
And I think you're gonna finally understand

[that is his day job]

Did it not brother anyone that she wore an American flag kilt? I've never cared for her since she tends to desecrate what every she wants to get an reaction but this time she went too far.

I would love to see people walk out of her concerts when she comes out dressed that way. You would see some real ugliness come out of her mouth then.

Charlie Daniels is wearing a kilt these days? For a good ol' boy, isn't that just a little too close to wearing a skirt?

I'm wondering why Bono out of U2 has been so quiet. I'm still waiting for him to pull Bin Laden, Bush, Blair and Sharon onto the stage to make peace signs and dance to 'Beautiful Day'.

Not enough people read to the end, it seems. Here's the executive summary, which I think is a tad more accurate than rushmc's:

God/Prayer

Ignorant comments against the ACLU/homosexuals/abortion/living together before marriage

Comments about drugs/gas gouging/idiotic politicians

Spelling out that we shouldn't bomb the country but take out those responsible

Let's pray

Don't attack Arab Americans

Let's pray

So, no, I don't condone his crap about homosexuality etc. but overall I think this is a positive message. I might not take my guidance from Charlie Daniels, but some people do. And if just one ignorant redneck stops abusing Arab Americans this week after reading this, Charlie Daniels has done a good job.

'Course, maybe it will incite a few more abortion clinic burnings and gay bashing. *sigh*

Can someone please explain to me why we seek out the opinions and national policy suggestions of celebrities.

Let's not forget, most actors, musicians, celebrities and entertainers are not Ph.D.'s in international relations. Most never even saw the inside of a college classroom. Why does Maria Carey's view of what we do carry more weight than a more studied expert in international relations or terrorism?

Most of these people are idiots. Can we stop sticking microphones into the faces of idiots?

Funny, before all this happened last week, there were a lot of people at shows on Madonna's current tour who were mighty pissed off that the entire show is scripted and choreographed down to the last encore.

No one cares what *I* think or feel about all of this---I have no Ph.D. in international relations---but I'm compelled to write, to talk, to share my thoughts, to try to understand. I know celeb-bashing is a time-honored tradition here on MeFi, but they're people too, with as much right to use whatever forum is available to them to express their sorrow as we web-scribblers have.

On another note, I think I'm gonna renew my ACLU membership real soon, as my own personal stand against the "hate speech" currently being directed at civil libertarians. It's the least I can do.

• Celebrities are like everyone on Metafilter -- everyone's got an opinion.

• Gossip reporters are paid to record anything big celebrities do -- if Madonna were willing to shit on the floor in front of cameras, the gossip reporters would be there because that's how they get paid.

• Fans will watch anything their favorite celebrities do or say. Madonna taking a shit would be a big, big hit with them.

So celebrity opinion will always be big news.

Yes, the typical actor has the brains of a cat -- that's why they go into acting -- but the typical fan has the brains of a hamster, so celebrities can't lose by talking to the media.

> think I'm gonna renew my ACLU membership real soon,

Bah. People are right to resent the media attention celebrity opinions get. You could have studied international relations and terrorism your entire life, but if Charlie Daniels cares to take a short break from his good-ol'-boyhood to say something about the events of September 11, it is Charlie Daniels, not you, who will get all of the attention.

People don't hate the celebrities; they disdain the people who give them airtime and the fans who take them seriously.
