Who cares if it's October .. I want to know what the best album you've heard this year is, I'd rate The Strokes, Radiohead's 'Amnesiac' and Squarepusher's 'Go Plastic'.

I liked Aerosmith's Just Push Play, it was a good way to kick off the year. The best album this year till date is the Cybernauts double CD, the live album is excellent but the 2nd disc containing the studio versions is even better. I prefer their versions over the originals.

go plastic is excellent... in a similarly nerdy techno/idm vein i'd suggest Herbert's Bodily Functions, and Richie Hawtin's DE9: Closer to the edit - both fairly recent releases. The latter is slated for hyped-up overexposure, but it's definitely with good reason, as it's really a very good mix. I think pole has a newish album out too, but I can't remember which one is new. I highly suggest looking up pole too, though.

Hmmm, I can't seem to get past "My Red Hot Car" on that Squarepusher album, but my vote for best album would be Four Tet's "Pause," Herbert's "Bodily Functions," or Deltron 3030.

i wasn't too impressed with the new aphex... there are some very good songs on there, but there's also a lot of filler. word is he made it a double album to more quickly get out of his contract with warp. don't get me wrong, it's definitely worth buying. but i wouldn't put it in the best albums of the year section.

that single he put out a few months back though... the 808 state remixes - that one's awesome.

I liked the first two albums mentioned in the initial post. It took me a while to warm up to the Strokes, though.

Weezer's green album kinda let me down. The songs sounded a lot better live, though.

The album that really rocks my ass right now, though, is Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's self-titled debut. Crazy stuff.

I also got into Sparklehorse this year. The new album, "It's a Wonderful Life" is pretty durn good, but "Good Morning Spider" achieved rock-my-ass levels comparable to those reached by BRMC.

For most overlooked album, and possibly best, I'd have to go with "Girls Can Tell" by Spoon... The new White Stripes album is good, but I think there last is better. There's still plenty coming out this year though, like the new (International) Noise Conspiracy.

Yep, "Girls Can Tell" is a stellar album...hope Spoon gets some more press come year end.

Strokes...I've had "Is This It" in various forms since May and its staying power has been lacking. I like it plenty, but it has nothing on:

i've heard a few tracks from the aphex and i have say i adore them.

thanks for the tip on herbert .. audiogalaxy allows me to sample his wares and its good stuff

interesting the comments about autechre .. their last 2 cd's i bought i've found abstract and cold beyond my obviously mainstream taste .. i loved amber though.

The one CD that has not been far from my player most of the year is Bran Van 3000's Discosis. You can only get it on import in the US though. The last two weeks have seen Goodbye Country, Hello Nightclub by Groove Armada on almost constant play.

I really wasn't impressed by Community Music - very worthy lyrics, but the music doesn't exactly groove, does it? Beck's Midnite Vultures and Grandaddy's Sophtware Slump were my most-played albums this year, but I have no idea when they were released. And I discovered Cracker (I'm in the UK, if that explains my previous ignorance), who rock in a reassuring kind of way. Can't say it's been the best of years for new music. Maybe because I still haven't bought anything by Squarepusher (and the new Herbie Hancock looks pretty good)...

ADF's Community Music will grow on you.
I felt bored by it at first, but it works over time into the soft bits of your head, like... uh..... meat weevils.

Also, I left out Iggy Pop's latest, Beat 'Em Up,
which I was really impressed by. The old man kicks ass, plain and simple.

I like the new Groove Armada album as well, and, I have to admit, the Moulin Rouge album. I won't let anyone tell the The Tango Roxanne isn't a work of genius. Anyway, this bit of music news cheered me up no end. Kylie keeps Michael Jackson off the top spot. Go Kylie.

Herbert might also have been my show of the year, I had tickets for it and everything. It was scheduled to take place on the night of 9/11, at the Knitting Factory - about 10 blocks north of the World Trade Center. Needless to say, it was cancelled.

Everyone in who loves music and songs and heartbreak and EVERYTHING should have a look at The Frames - "For the Birds". A fantastic album by a sadly underated Irish band... They're touring the states very shortly and if you get chance to see them then please do. It will change your life. I honestly can't recommend them enough... without a doubt probably the bestest live band you will ever see.

i was looking forward to the new spiritualized and mercury rev albums, but haven't been listening to them much since i've got them. in large part because i can't stop listening to "the glow" pt. 2 by the microphones. brittle stars is really really good, too. (just found out about them from anewnoise.) oh and the beta band's hot shots II.

For indie rock one-stop shopping, you can't beat Col. Jeffrey Pumpernickel: A Concept Album. Such luminaries as Quasi, Helium, Guided by Voices, Poster Children, Grandaddy, and others each composed a song for the overarching theme, which has something to do with allergies, robots, and rebirth.

I wasn't a big fan of Captain Pumpernickel . Amnesiac was good, but a disappointment. The best albums of the year, so far? Pedro the Lion's It's Hard to Find a Friend, and Mogwai's Rock Action.

The Langley Schools Music Project is a 60-voice chorus of rural school children from western Canada, untrained but captivated by melodic magic, singing tunes by the Beach Boys, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, The Bay City Rollers, and others. The students accompany themselves with the shimmering gamelan chimes of Orff percussion, and elemental rock trimmings arranged by their itinerant music teacher, Hans Fenger.

Not a lot of hip-hop music on this thread, so I'll mention Cannibal Ox -- The Cold Vein. It's one of the best hip-hop albums of the last two years.

And on the 'intelligent dance music' front Lesser and his album Mensa Dance Squad put squarepusher to shame.

Just yesterday I discovered Cybertribe's Immortality. It was on one of the listening stations at my local Barnes & Noble and I was immediately enthralled. Bought it, listened to it, fell in love with it.

According to the jacket it's "Trance/Electronica." If you say so--I have absolutely no exposure to trance, so I have no idea whether this album is typical of the genre or not. What I really enjoy about this album is the incorporation of the digeridoo and the South American pipes (that I can never remember the name of) with more contemporary instruments/beats.

Sigur Ros.
David Byrne, Look Into the Eyeball, is great tuneful fun.
This band called My Morning Jacket has a great song, "The Way That He Sings."
But lack of money + the pleasures of audiogalaxy have seriously fractured my listening habits, and I find myself listening more to songs than new albums from 2001. So for me the very best music still predates Jan. 1, and much probably, say, 1980? (i.e., Louis Armstrong, Robert Johnson, Ray Charles, John Coltrane, etc. etc.)

+ Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, The Swimming Hour -- easily one of the best albums I've heard this year.
+ OK GO released two untitled EPs this year, both excellent. They're in the studio recording the full-length, and they're on tour with They Might Be Giants.
+On the retro tip, Bob Dylan's Love and Theft is pretty damn good.

Can't say I have a final opinion yet, being that Dave Matthews Band's "Live In Chicago" doesn't come out for another 12 days.

Weezer was OK but doesn't approach the blue album, Aerosmith's "Just Push Play" was also a buy that I don't regret, and while not great it was a welcome break from the thick fog of girly-pop and boy-band junk we seem to be buried in these days.

I can't disagree more with The Strokes. The Strokes = boy band for hipsters....

Okay, finished being crass. But I really dig The Shins album, Oh Inverted World. Been listening to a lot of Manu Chao, even though I don't know what the hell he's talking about a lot of the time. And it's mentioned above, but Mercury Rev's All is Dream is a hauntingly beautiful album.

for purely selfish reasons i'm loving this thread .. plus it also once again proves the paranoid music industry wrong .. for me and seemingly many people mp3 has become a try before you buy medium ..

especially as smaller cooler shops are being pushed out by hmv and tower where you can't ask the assistant's advice or listen to lots of cd's before buying.

This has been a fascinating and informative thread. I didn't know Cake had a new album, and I've been trying to remember Rufus Wainwright's damn name so I could purchase. I'm not really into any music that came out this year. I'm still spending a lot of time with music from last year.

Agaetis Byrjun, Sigur Ros' masterwork, was released at the very beginning of 2000. It made most critics' lists last year, and although it was only picked up by a major North American label this summer (it was previously distributed here by Bubblecore), I would say that it's ineligible for the "Best of 2001" spot.
