Unemployed people are supposed to be actively looking for work, not spending all of their time answering e-mail, drawing cartoons and getting interviewed on television about being unemployed. So there is a good chance Todd Rosenberg, creator of oddtodd.com and "Laid Off: A Day in the Life," will be asked to repay the last seven weeks of his unemployment benefits.

Well...good! It sounds like his cartooning job is taking off anyway.

Without a job and broke is not the same as unemployed. The unemployment rate everyone talks about really is the percentage of people without jobs who want and are looking for one, not how many people are not employed. If you counted the latter, you'd included students, retirees, housewives, and other people that do no.

This guy's not unemployed... just lazy and stupid.

"just lazy and stupid"

Wow. Sounds like you got some issues there, techgnoll.

Got something to get off your chest?

Dammit.

I wanted to post this.

*sighs*

With all the new attention, I wonder if he's going to get more donations (borrowing from Peter) to defray the tax costs (pay Paul).

There are a lot of people sitting in their bathrobes in front of the TV all day long. Yes, some of them are indeed lazy and living off the government (if you can call that living) -- but there are a lot who simply can't find a job. When I went through my "laid off" phase I spent a month and a half with my kid. The phone rarely rang, and nobody was returning calls or even aknowledging resumes. Interviewing didn't really happen. It's a tough market, and is the unemployment agency wants to be jerks about it they can, but it's pretty darn lame.

He doesn't have the money; the tip jar has been paying his rent. "I really am unemployed," he said. "I really am broke

Then he really should have been looking for a job.

I have been unemployed in the past. They do not require a hell of a lot, only that you at least send out some resumes (at least that is what I had to do).

Sounds like he got a little caught up in his cartoons.

I think he will be alright, after all, he just got even more exposure. Could be another interview on tv, a paying one I hope.

Um, could the people who have jobs not judge the people without? The job market is horrible. There's nothing out there, not even temp work. So please, stop speaking from your position of privilege.

Um, could you stop assuming those with jobs don't understand the situation? I was unemployed for months in 2001 from a layoff, but since I'm employed now I guess it's not possible for me to have a valid opinion, right?

Pay the money back or face up to the consequences. Unemployment compensation has conditions, he's an adult, and the rules do apply to him. That's how it goes.

People gave this guy money? I didn't laugh at his cartoon once. I might have had he not used an annoying, fake, "I'm a moron"-type voice.
He should have to pay up just for being annoying.
He also sounds remarkably pompous.

The job market is actually quite good by historical standards (living standards continue to decline, but that's another story). The unemployment rate is still lower than any economist 10 years ago would say is sustainable. If you're expecting the employment picture to return where it was two or three years ago, it may not happen in your lifetime.

Gee whillikers- thanks, electro! I'm gonna go print out your last comment and hand it to my landlord in lieu of next month's rent.

I was laid off. I was on unemployment. It saved my ass.

It was also completely clear that a condition for unemployment payments was (1) can't have an income stream, and (2) have to look for a job.

This guy failed on both counts and has nothing to whine about as far as I'm concerned.

I imagine this means we can expect another tip jar to help cover the expenses associated with the first.
