We can all have the day off today, unless - like me - you read this whilst at work
Reading that story made me ill. A good utilization of sick time is to take a day off every once in awhile so you don't get sick. Also, the best days to take off are wednesday or thursday. If you do not take monday or friday off as a sick day you will be able to pull it off more smoothly. Besides taking a thursday off means you only have to go to work for one day and it is the weekend! ANyways, my point is that companies like Tesco should be ashamed. Cutting absenteeism from 5.8 to 4.6%. whoopeee. I would be pissed if I called in sick and was handed to a absenteeism representative.

Must become worker robot droid to succeed... must work overtime every week and never take vacation so will have six months of unused and unusable (too much pressure, can't leave work) time off saved up.

Many American companies have been moving toward a system of unregulated "personal/sick" days. That is, they don't care why you take it, but you only get so many.
In part this reflects an earlier trend to eliminate religious discrimination, e.g. where Jews get Jewish holidays off, but everybody including Jews gets Christmas off because the office is closed anyway, by designating religious holidays as personal days to be taken on the individual's religious schedule.
Seems a little less intrusive than all this stuff about "false sickness" (not to mention ("are you really Jewish?").
