The philosopher's first visit to the web might be a bit distressing: witness aesthetics.com, ontology.com, and epistemology.com...

A philosophy student friend of mine noted often with a certain bemusement that dotcom PR/"strategy" firms often advertized positions for "ontologists." (I think they needed someone to talk about "the semantic web," whose people throw "ontology" around alot. Or, they could be like my favorite PR firm--Quiddity--whose slogan was: That which makes a thing what it is.

Aesthetics.com features the slogan "You. Only Better."

That was just instantly depressing.

Not to mention hegel.com, socrates.com, schopenhauer.com and of course philosophy.com which includes sections on all major branches of philosophy.

For a good philosophy site, check TPM Online.

I checked schopenhauer.com too - looks like it's the same people as epistemology.com. kant.com is for sale... (and solipsism.com has a prominent link to the libertarians, which explains a lot ;-)

If you check Ontology.org you'll see part of why web strategists advertise of "Ontologists" -- it's a high-theoretical way that database and business-information-interchange experts talk about structuring knowledge for use in collaborative commerce environments.

Well, and who would have thought suck.com led you to a daily commentary site?

Aww, dammit, I guess I will.

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
who could think you under the table.
David Hume could out consume
Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, (Other versions: "Shoppenhauer and Hegel")
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
who was just as sloshed as Schlegel.

There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya
'bout the raisin' of the wrist.
Socrates himself was permanently pissed.

John Stewart Mill, of his own free will,
after half a pint of shandy was particularly ill.
Plato, they say, could stick it away,
'alf a crate of whiskey every day!
Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle,
and Hobbes was fond of his Dram.
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart:
"I drink, therefore I am."

Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed;
A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's pissed.

Oh, the above from this Monty Python FAQ.

Now that's thinking out of the box!

I think Hegel would be *very* cranky about the Flash at hegel.com. Not to mention the phrase "additives are added."

Objectivism.org, however, is exactly what you'd expect... *sigh*

why the sighing? i don't get it.

That's rich. The Ayn Rand Institute. Maybe it should have a link to Irony.com. Of course, it's a RPG site. I have an internet connection, but no dice.

Irony's been around since 1994-5 if I remember correctly -- I once played in one of their PBeMs in middle school, actually.

And yes, their layout was exactly the same.

Eidos. That's... just... wrong.

And jcterminal -- the sighing is because I personally feel Objectivism is one of the most ridiculous excuses for a "philosophy" that's ever been concocted. The name itself contradicts its doctrine.
