Boy survives getting struck by lightning (a man standing next to him dies) and his mom starts a struck by lightning community site to help deal with the trauma, share information, and share experiences about these sorts of events.

Perhaps the weirdest way a website has started, but a good way to deal with such an event in my opinion.

I hope I never have any reason to join.

Justin, a shy youth from Santee who skates, plays electric guitar and listens to Metallica, had no idea what lay ahead less than an hour later.

Metallica, eh? Wonder what he thinks of this album.

But seriously, folks. I'm bookmarking this lightning site, just in case God reads Metafilter.

they missed the point, didn't they? focusing on the fact that he was struck by lightning, instead of how the episode made mortality real.
for a support site this is no doubt futile; you have to try real hard and start a support group with less people it can help: the 'my are kids spoiled by lottery winnings' support group, to name one.
it's futile only because it missed the point. i mean, lightning affects the minimal amount of people, while mortality affects us all. the irony.

"The weekend was mostly uneventful."

Except for the part where an arc of electricity five miles long briefly united earth, man, and heavens. That and the smoking head and the kid running non-stop down a mountain at about seventy miles an hour with his pants full of steaming feces was all fairly eventful.

What are you expecting of people -- to respond to every unusual life-threatening event by becoming goths? I guess the autoerotic asphyxiation survivors, Coke Machine accident survivors, and the others who are touched by rare, random tragedies should just close up shop, dye their hair black, and start macabre literary journals.

I think God should pay this boy reparations of $1,000,000,000,000.

Not Jehovah, though. Thor, or maybe Zeus.

O, such tragedy! Truly, it is only through Morrissey that I might find a reason to live, it is only through makeup that I might express what is too sublime to put into words.

Why do I wear black, if not to show that I am in mourning for what is lost; yea, for the world itself.

Only Peter Murphy understands me.

Get struck by lightning, then go buy a lotto ticket.

Get struck by lightning, go home, reduce your family's electricity bill. "Son ... I'd like my toast now?"

Maybe he should buy lottery tickets.
