According to the latest info I can find on the Byrd Glacier it will have moved 21.68 feet in 36 hours, not 14.76.

Well that was adorable. It took awhile for me to wrap my head around the scale, but once I did it was pretty cool. Something about the idea of whole lifetimes collapsing into seconds on youtube seems fascinating.

Some bamboo grows at 4 feet a day, not 3.

"Let's visualise that...."

Can I not just multiply things by 3,600?

What if the births of the million babies in that one minute three seconds were all filmed and uploaded to YouTube?

I just did that thing to myself that I got when watching the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I could only watch 6 days or so of this. What happens in the end?

I only identified with some of those. I can visualize 9 months of gestation. However, just using a large number of one thing to visualize a large number of another thing...that doesn't work. I don't know anything more about 36,000 orbits of the earth than I do about weeks of YouTube uploads.

Also, according to the latest info on Nyan Cat it can only do 0.342 nyans a second.

How about something I can use, man? In the time it takes Liz Lemon to snart, enough video gets uploaded to YouTube for Crispin Glover to do 546 David Letterman kicks!

"Can I not just multiply things by 3,600?"

No, you cannot. That would just be showing off. I, on the other hand, need pretty pictures to explain the simpler things in life. Especially things that involve maths.

maths

In the time it takes Kevin Klein to say "Don't call me stupid!" there is enough YouTube video for limey K-K-K-Ken to recite Kubla Khan.

Technically, unliteral, some bamboo grows at 3.75 feet a day, not 4.

Just sayin'.

Outside of the USA, some bamboo grows at 1.3 centimeters per kilosecond.

Amount of apples to amount of oranges... it will never make sense.

Literally, true. Which is why some of these are silly to use. Glacier movement is prone to fluctuations, as is bamboo growth.

Youtube blew?

In 4 minutes of uploads to YouTube, 10 days of video is uploaded, and Fenton the dog chases a herd of deer over 3,600 miles. I also liked the ketchup one.

Also, according to the latest info on Nyan Cat it can only do 0.342 nyans a second.

But I run it at 32x on my dvr.

If you need help visualising that, that's 213.6 nyans in the time it takes to transfer the printed collection of the U. S. Library of Congress across the theoretical station wagon full of SD cards link.

Outside of the USA, some bamboo grows at 1.3 centimeters per kilosecond.

That's just a silly unit. No-one really uses centimetres.

Yeah, I don't really understand the need for any kind of infographic: it's just comparing different things that take 3,600 times as long as eachother?

I just contributed 90 seconds. Your welcome YouTube.

pompomtom: "across the theoretical station wagon full of SD cards link."

Yes, but the whole advantage of the Internet isn't the ability to transmit a petrabyte, it's transmitting the, say, 1 GB / day (plus or minus, depending on your audio / video needs) of data I specifically need incredibly cheaply and quickly, without requiring either a station wagon or a guy to drive it.

How do you get 'Nyan Cat' from NY Cat? Why are so many consonants missing? How, exactly, is that 'cute'? It turned itself from something mildly interesting into something annoying, so I closed the window.

I'm not talking about the internet. I'm just expressing a unit of time (you know... the time it takes the world to upload 1,171 minutes of video to youtube).

At 4 minutes 40 seconds, it suggests using the arrow keys to skip ahead.

"In 20 hours 54 minutes of uploads to YouTube,
using sound energy alone, you heat a cup of coffee
by yelling at it.
8 years, 7 months, 6 days of video"

Calling this a 'visualization' doesn't even make sense because they're just showing images of random items, then mentioning a duration of time arbitrarily associated with it. Like a picture of an iceberg, then some amount of time, and then another amount of time, and the distance it will travel in the second amount, which has nothing to do with the image. So basically nothing in this makes sense at all.

pretty pictures with meaningless numbers. That was rather pointless and didn't help me 'visualise' anything more than the original concept "1 hour of video per second". And most of the stats seemed somewhat dodgy anyway

It would be a lot better if it didn't slow down to a crawl halfway through. WTF, Google? Optimization, heard about it?
posted by ymgve at 4:13 AM on January 24, 2012

That sounds like a lot. But put it this way: At the rate video is being uploaded to YouTube, we could film people's lives in real time. How many people? 3600. Of 7 billion.

Petabyte=one million gigabytes

Petrabyte.
