5024 on the first attempt, but I've been sucked deep into 2048 for the last week or so.

It's a little eyeball hurty, but the lack of numbers makes it a bit more playful - I didn't get the same sense of desperation as I do when I'm chasing two 256 squares around the board.

This is a good game but it's hard to strategize because I keep forgetting if e.g. rainbow-background doge is going to turn into purple-and-grey-stripes doge or the other way around so which one should I try to position the pizza doges next to

If only there were some indicator of the order of doge upgrades

Perhaps a numerical system of some sort

Just beat it. As long as you play using the optimal (human) strategy for 2048... that is, lining your "high" pieces in order of rank along one side, and using the remaining three columns to constantly try to improve your lowest high piece, it's relatively easy. Using that strategy you don't even necessarily have to remember the values of any of those higher-ranked pieces. In fact, it was only the score (~20,000; using a similar or identical system to 2048) that alerted me that I was nearing the end.

Much fun!

I kind of think that the Doge game might favor the player a little by dropping more higher-value Doge's more often later in the game, because I've gotten scores in the mid-4000 range several times in a row, while I topped out somewhere in the 3000's playing the 2048 game.

Maybe that's because Doge is benevolent, and wants to bring joy to people's lives.

I just tried that out, but in three rounds of left-down-right-down my highest score was around 5,500, while playing normally I've gotten the 2048 (a score of 20,480), so I'm not really buying that.

Why bother pressing keys when you can just watch the game play itself? (Discussion.)
posted by Nelson at 8:14 AM on March 19, 2014 [1 favorite]

This is odd. I get better results if I declare one direction to be verboten and only press that key if the game would be blocked if I don't.
I just scored 15364, I've played a fair bit but this is way better than before I tried this strategy.

posted by double block and bleed at 7:11 PM on March 19, 2014

Yeah, that's the best strategy because it keeps the highest scoring blocks on one row (think about why that happens for a second.)
posted by empath at 7:29 PM on March 19, 2014

That's easy enough to understand. It also keeps the new incoming blocks on the same side of the field. So it keeps blocks sorted, and that's useful.

But I didn't expect that to make it this much harder to get stuck.

Who's a good doge now? Oh, yes, yes, you are! Good doge. Such a good doge.
