Weren't pitbulls orginally called Nursery Dogs/ Nanny Dogs cause they tolerate being poked and prodded by little hands and where very protective of thier charges?

One of the more interesting factoids is that kids who have such dogs as babies are less likely to suffer from asthma or other auto-immune diseases. (Or peanut allergies etc.) Seems it's because dogs are inherently dirty so the baby's immune system gets properly challenged, and doesn't develop wrong.

It's an example of the hygiene hypothesis, which I think probably should rate "theory" by now.

That tongue!

My reaction, word for word. That's one of the greatest tongues I've ever seen.

I guarantee that a kid and a dog don't live in that house.

The dog sorta reminds me of Flowers for Algernon, though...

Lola is an English Bulldog, not a Pitbull. That said, I was raised by a succession of Staffordshire Bull Terriers (my parents were somewhat involved). They are the gentlest, most tolerant and kids friendly dogs ever. My parents tell the story of how, as a baby, I'd throw my teddy out of the pram and our dog would patiently put it back in every time.

For some reason all of the (couple of things) I've seen posted from the My Modern Met blog have shared the same sort of sentimental, mannered, upscale-magazine/wedding-photo/occasionally-almost-verging-on-stock-photography aesthetic. It's not at all my cup of tea, but they certainly seem to have found a consistent style to run with.

Feeling an immense sense of guilt and sadness that she wouldn't be able to give Harper a sibling ...
Oh FFS. It's not like it's the end of the world being an only child.

When my Dad's giant lab finally worked up the courage to sniff our four-month old and then immediately lapped her face my first thought was, "We can stop worrying about any dog allergies now."

Being an only child with a dog sister is AWESOME!

(says the person whose shepherd mix could chew gum, sit and have her nails painted, wear tutus AND pretend to ride a bike for photos...)

That dog guarded my bassinet like WHOA -- my parents told me she would not let anyone who wasn't them near unless they specifically said it was ok. And when some dumbass misdiagnosing pediatrician accused me of being allergic (I'm not, at all), and told my mom to get rid of the dog, my mom said: "The dog was here first. How about we get rid of the kid?"

I can't say that I blame her. Our dog was amazing. It was a privilege to grow up alongside someone so loving and wonderful.

I just sent this to my wife, since we are both dog-less dog people in a 650 sq ft. Brooklyn apartment with a baby and she immediately informed me we are getting [our ten month old baby] a dog tomorrow.
Thanks?
