Someone misses all the quick time events in a Heavy Rain chase sequence. Benny Hill ensues. (SLYT)

The determination of that chasing guy... it is mind-bending. As are his decision making skills.

How is Miroslav still in sight after all that?

This had me in stitches from about eight seconds in, because this looks like me playing anything with QTEs.

Think I ruptured something at the chickens.

Loved the slapstick. Hated the forced hyena laffs accompaniment. But apparently it's a thing now.

I had to stop halfway through because of the laughter.

But what's the point of a QTE sequence if failing the QTEs doesnt make you lose?

The interactivity justifies the $60 you spent on a game instead of months of Netflix.

Yeah, I muted it halfway through myself. It was too much!

The insane, over-the-top laughter totally made this video, IMHO.

Objectively wrong! So, thanks, Ursula Hitler!

yeah I also could've done without the laughter. That was hilarious though, and actually informative since I don't ever fail at the QTE's so much to see all that stuff.

and here's one with actual Yakety Sax on top (sped up to match the music of course)

The best thing about this is I have no idea what I'm watching and most importantly, I don't want to know!
From my perspective, this is interesting.

I suppose it makes the player feel like they accomplished something, or at least had some authorship in the events that just unfolded onscreen.

I hate games like this and avoid them like the plague—but they sell like hotcakes, so I guess I'm just an old man yelling at clouds. As per usual.

They're making this game into a movie. They thought the best writer for the job would be David Milch, the creator of Deadwood, who has never played a video game or used a computer.

Justinian: "But what's the point of a QTE sequence if failing the QTEs doesnt make you lose?"

My understanding about Heavy Rain is that your performance in the QTEs can affect the paths available going forward, and the ending you see. The game was trying super hard to be a movie instead of a video game, so failing and starting over (as would be standard in a video game) was not a possibility. The reason a video game was trying so hard to not be a video game is left as an exercise for the player.

To be fair, it's barely a video game, so he should do fine.

Okay, I've officially not played games for too long, because I have no idea what was going on in that video. What exactly was he not doing?

Loved it, but was anyone else just a little disappointed that he wasn't nipped by a crab when he grabbed the fish counter for support?

smackfu, did you see the little circles that popped up on the screen, which turned red all the time? The player was supposed to press the symbols in the circles, at the right time. If they had done so properly, the character would not have bumbled through the chase (see here for an example of someone getting it mostly right).

The insane, over-the-top laughter totally made this video unwatchable with sound on, IMHO.

I generally do not like the addition of QT events to game flow, because at least the ones I've played are too much guess-which-random-button-you'll-need-to-press-in-precise-time-and-sequence events.

Eh, I think no-fail but branching games are certainly valid. Not saying that Heavy Rain implemented the idea well though. I've never been a big David Cage fan.

Before I watch this, is anyone laughing in it and do you approve or disapprove of said laughter if so?

> do you approve or disapprove of said laughter

Approve, because it's reminiscent of "oh laddergoat, you so random"

Could have used some "oh, my stom-ach" and "what is that, a bird?"

Heavy Rain: Clouseau Edition
posted by um at 2:45 PM on September 1, 2015

Heavy Rain is a fascinating but deeply flawed game, and this can't-lose section is not at all representative. There are multiple paths through the story, and there are no do-overs. All but one (or two?) of the main characters you control can die at multiple points. There are whole sections of the game you may never see. I didn't get this part in my playthrough. If you enjoy story-based games I highly recommend it, but uh, don't bother trying to figure out who the killer is. It's just going to make you angry when you find out.

I've laughed very much like that in certain games. The perfect storm is having a couple of people together who have a good-faith effort to actually do well, and for whatever reason, get off to such a horrible start that it's hilarious, and the laughing keeps you from having any semblance of control. The rest of it is just self-fulfilling prophesy at that point, based based on prior behavior, which just compounds the laughter and continued lack of success.
