I believe the term cape should not be applied to any cloak longer than hip length and that a cape is often of a more frivolous style than a cloak.

There is a near-infinite garden of delightful opinions here!

For a moment I thought one of my favorite tv shows was coming back. Don't play with my feelings.

Unless it's in a superheroes movie or cosplay I don't think we'll see people wearing capes in the immediate future.

When I went to Scotland 20 years ago (while studying abroad in college) I had saved up and splurged on a black wool-cashmere cape. It was a big splurge for a college student, but as souvenirs go it's pretty great since I'm still using it 20 years later! It doesn't go in and out of fashion, it's hella warm, it goes over any dressy dress, it doesn't stop fitting if you lose or gain weight or get pregnant. A+++ would cape again.

I was going to say "of course not" but looking through those pictures the ones with the capes or ponchos are the only coherent ideas in the bunch. The rest of it looks like you threw a bunch of fashion magazines from the last 40 years up in the air and that's how they landed.

We're really out of ideas, aren't we?

I saw a cape in the wild today! The wearer was maybe three and technically she was dressed as Elsa on coronation day, but she was definitely the best dressed kid at music class.

My mother sewed a lovely black wool cloak for me when I was pregnant and couldn't fit into my coat, twenty years ago. She lined it beautifully with purple. The only thing wrong with it is that a cloak is uncomfortable to wear in the car; it's hard to lean forward unless you've made allowances for doing so when first getting in. But it's very nice.

This is the warmest garment I own. I wear it with reenactment garb and, in emergencies, with modern clothing as well. Sometimes people stare, but I ask you, who's the warm one here?

I made a cape as a first communion gift to my 'niece,' because heathen Aunt Cobalt didn't want to do the traditional stuff. It has been the most loved gift I think I've ever given.

My wool red cape I bought in college still gets out every once in a while. The faux leather clasp needs to be replaced but the rest is just so perfect for New England falls.

I'd like to see formal business capes come back.

But they won't.

Seriously though, remember Lando Calrissian? He **ROCKED** that cape. Though I guess it might have been more of a cloak? Whatever it was, Billy Dee made it look awesome!

Of course if I wore a cloak I'd just look like a loser in a cloak, but at least I'd be trying to aspire to the awesomeness of Billy Dee!

I have a Slovenian Army Surplus woolen cloak that is one of the best items I own. It's warm, it's waterproof, it has straps that you button behind your back so it stays on you like it's a backpack, it has a detachable hood (that I never use)...

Seriously, a piece of heavy fabric that you can wear and wrap around you is amazing. Everyone should have one.

It is not unusual to see a man in in a cape in Milan city center, capital of fashion. Capes are part of the caribinieri high uniform and of a few military academy's around here. They are regularly on the runways, and I have seen a few people don on to go to the Scala.
But I have yet to see one out of these circles (larp not included).

I own two hip-length vintage nurse's capes (one purple, one black), a green wool hooded cloak that I mostly wear for hobbit-related occasions, and a lightweight dark blue hooded cliack I made for Renn Faire. I did sell my long purple 60s cape that made me look like lady Sherlock Holmes, because I never wore it and two purple capes seemed like overkill. Capes are great.

This actually seems like the ideal use-case for a cloak? Just go full Bolverk with it and wear a heavy cloak over a bare chest. (Or over a t-shirt, if you want to be all modest.)

I used to think capes were awesome until I wore a cape to work every weekend. You think about them swirling around you as you stalk purposefully towards your destiny; you think about pulling them about you for warmth on a fall evening.

Here's what you don't consider until you've worn them for a while.

First of all, it's going to get snagged and attempt to strangle you. This isn't an occasional thing; this is a cape's main occupation. It doesn't have anything to do but hang out on your back all day, it gets bored, it decides to get caught in a closing door so you can watch your life flash before your eyes. Again. Edna said no capes for a reason. Even if you're not a superhero, they're going to get you killed.

Second, about that warmth. There you are, on a cold winter evening, mighty cloak pulled about you, toasty warm as you stand watch over the mall or whatever. Someone comes along and offers you a nice hot cup of cocoa. You gratefully reach out for it, and suddenly your cloak goes from being a cozy cocoon of warm snuggliness to being a sail filled with all the cold wind it can gather from the iciest corners of the earth. It is at times like this that you deeply understand how much humanity needs sleeves.

Lastly, capes look great doing one thing. If you look at the making-of clips for any of the recent superhero movies involving capes, the costume department has a ton of different capes; they've got one for striding about purposefully, one for flying, one for punching things, one for soliloquizing, and so on. That's because the cape that looks awesome swirling around you as you stride insistently towards fate looks absolutely ridiculous when you try to sit down. What do you do with it? Do you let it hang behind you so people walk on it? Wad it up and put it in your lap? You're going to have to pose carefully, lest you look like a hobo in a blanket.

Capes: An idea whose time has passed.

Thank you.

This is why I'm glad my Slovenian Army Surplus cloak has arm slits (that also feature pockets within the cloak itself which is awesome). I can keep things closed up tight and still get my arms out.

Also makes driving while wearing it easier.

We have a local guy who wanders around in a cape. An old roommate of mine used to do this until he was publicly dissuaded.

As for Edna Mode, I'm not great at screenprinting, but I'd like to do a shirt sometime that says "Super Pragmatist" on the front, in a Superman-ish logo, and then have a "No Capes" on the back with a drawn on cape on the back of the shirt.

how does someone who can do all kinds of fancy things with costumes that accommodate specific powers not get the idea of breakaway cape pins?

I've made several of these for various children (mostly girlo), and they were all pretty popular. They are much easier to make than coats, and not nearly as prone to being grown out of and look good over party dresses. the Harry Potter factor probably helps too. One was made for a friend's daughter when she was seven, and (with a very generous hem has lasted her until now, when she's 15, although now it's a cape.

There's a grown-up version of the same pattern that I've also made, although not for myself. They really only suit tall people - I'm short (5') and rather wide, and they make me look like a large bundle of laundry with feet.

I love blankets. As a kid I used to hate leaving my warm blankets so I would just wrap them around me and over my head and walk around the house that way. I'm a grown-ass adult now and I still do this on occasion. (Why yes I do live alone, thanks.) I never really thought about it that way but it looks like a cloak is essentially that. At least, that amazing-looking woolen cloak in the linked video is essentially that. Super envious of that dude right now.

It's about as cold as I ever remember it being in Portland this week, and if I thought for one hot second I could get away with just wrapping up in blankets and toddling over to the grocery store or whatever, I'd do it. I would totally wear that kind of cloak as the next best thing.

Lost to the magic box of time many moves ago, there are times that I really wish I'd packed more carefully, just throw that on and your costume party outfit wins awards. But, just like being a death cloth that snags and strangles an extra huge thing in the closet is really just not worth it.
