Bonnie Raitt has been my father's celebrity crush since about 1971. Mom thinks it's cute.

He still talks about the time she was playing at the blues club his friends owned, and he was filling in for bartender that night - and instead of heading backstage after her set, she came over to the bar, sat down and grinned at him and chirped "Hi!" and all he could think to say is ".....uh, want a beer?" and she said sure, and "so I gave her a beer and she sat there drinking it just like a normal person!"

Another transcendent sit in: Lowell George of Little Feat sits in with Bonnie Raitt, Freebo, and John Hammond and play Steve Winwood's Can't Find My Way Back Home. The first 2:30 or so is session banter, then they find their way into the song, and that *voice*.

Oh my God Sublimity - that is one of my favorite songs, I just put that on and closed my eyes and listened. I have a feeling I am going to be sharing this whole thread with my Dad later.

A few pictures here.

Look at those shoulder pads. Like she's on the football team.

I just discovered the JGB this year. Never was much of a Grateful Dead fan (even saw them in 1979, because we all figured that they were going to fold that year, they were so irrelevant compared to everything else going on). Who knew.

But the JGB is like the parts I liked about the GD -- the exploratory jams, and of course Jerry's guitar -- without the parts I could do without, like the hokey fake-blues. Fortunately there's tons of live JGB on the tube, key is not to binge it and get sick of it.

And Bonnie, never did see her. I used to have some cassette tapes of her shows in the early 70s, which went to whatever cassette tapes disappear to when you don't put them back in their cases and file them back. Nice to have this though.

Bonnie Raitt is still alive and her voice is still amazing. I've seen her in concert twice, most recently about three years ago. Here's hoping she's willing and able to be back in concert when the world opens up again.
