Thanks! I almost wasted my AskMetafilter question on this, but this FPP came to the rescue just in time. Now I can use my question to ask if it's safe to remove the avacado from my light socket.

Both funny and deeply upsetting to watch. I don't know how to describe this feeling that I have.

When the ham is in the drive, is it a sandwich?

I believe it is technically a raviolo.

Perhaps you jest, rikschell, but I'm apparently not afraid to admit that I've gotten potato stuck in a light socket.

Were you trying to remove a broken light bulb? i've heard that using a potato was a safe method for doing that but I've never tried it.

Yes, indeed, NotTheRedBaron. It does work, except when the potato breaks. I cut the circuit to the fixture and eventually got the base of the bulb out by screwing it out with pliers.

Once again, as usual, it's cheese to the rescue.

The sciency explanation at the end was just gilding the lily, imo.

I wonder if you could use a block of cheese to remove a broken light bulb, in lieu of a potato (the name of my sex tape).

I mean sure this works, obviously it works, you just watched the video right? But did you see all the torn cheese bits? Bit of a waste, that. A mess too. For next-level ham removal, you want Cheddar - shredded, not sliced. That lets the tray close without jamming it shut. Next you're going to want to flip the drive upside down, distributing the cheese evenly on the ham. Now this is the crucial bit - hook it up to your PC, and tell it to write a CD. What's that, ham isn't a CD? That's all right, it's still a burner innit? Pick a medium-length disc - something like Pink Floyd's Animals is a good bet, it's only about 41 minutes so you won't overcook the ham. While you're waiting, butter up a couple of slices of bread and get ready to celebrate your ham removal with both a cheese-free drive and a nice ham & cheese toastie.

CD drives! I remember those, but it's been years since I've owned one and even longer since I tried to boot up Windows from a piece of ham.

Did anyone else have an "Up Next" queue that was five serious videos about hacking CD-roms and one Evangelion trailer? Or was that YouTube trying to improve my life?

If you put a slice of ham in a DVD drive, it plays a short film about pigs.

Not sure this guy knows what he's talking about as he's holding a DVD drive, not a CD drive. Pretty sure for CD and CD-R only drives, you're better off using sliced tomato to get the ham out.

Maybe if you're out of cheese...

It's still best practice to use a fried egg to remove back bacon from a Blu-ray drive, right?

Have to be careful with this technique. Too much ham and cheese and it becomes FAT32.

Trick I learned back in the 70's/80's was to flip a screwdriver around, and shove the insulated handle into the bulb base, and use that to back it out of the socket. Of course it works better with some screwdrivers than others. The rubber coating on Ideal screwdrivers worked well IIRC....

I have "A Proof That The Square Root of 2 Is Irrational," "Vinny's Gonna Do Some Origami ASMR," "Adaptable Coders: Are you one of them?" "Relaxing Video Game Music for 3 Hours (Vol. 3)" & "Akira - Animation the Hard Way"

only #2 & #4 are recognizably my own fault
