ZEPPELIN! Well, sorta.

The Bonnaroo lineup announcement is always a big deal, but this morning's was especially exciting because according to the Associated Press and any number of news outlets, the reunited Led Zeppelin would be headlining. Trouble is, it's not true. It's all-girl cover-band Lez Zeppelin.

The Chicago Sun-Times had a rather lengthy piece about the would-be reunion, which has been pulled in the last hour or so. Interestingly, Robert Plant is going to be there anyway (performing with Allison Krauss), so who knows what might happen?

Sounds like another fine piece of reporting by the AP.

Well,
"oops".

I recently was sitting next to Steph Paynes (the guitarist and founder of Lez Zepplin) on the subway one night. She was either in transit to or from a gig or rehearsal, and she was unconsciously air guitaring to her ipod. I snuck a peek during the ride from downtown to uptown as she scrolled through her itunes, and sure enough, her entire collection appeared to be entirely Led Zepplin. That's commitment.

I am trying to sneak a comment in from work, and what I get for my effort are lots of typos. Apologies.

Lez Zeppelin got higher billing than Little Feat?
WTF?

rocket88 writes "Lez Zeppelin got higher billing than Little Feat?"

Well, Little Feat is great, but it's really not the same band since Lowell George died.

The site linked to is not great, here is their myspace page, with play-by-default mp3s built right in.

They will never match their 2006 lineup... though I see they did bring back some of the best acts from that year...

And I see they have at least PART of Led Zeppelin there... Robert Plant and Alliscon Krause :)

They are actually not that bad. The lead singer takes a good pass at Plant's growl and scream. I wouldn't mind seeing them live. Besides...lesbians.

Yeah, I don't think Bonnaroo can ever match the greatness that was 2006. Plus....Metallica? What the hell?

Pearl Jam, Metallica, The Allman Brothers, Robert Plant... what fuckin' year is it again?

Rockers with walkers. What no grandpa petty and heatbreakers with pacemkers?

Yeah, but there are some good non-geriatric bands in the non-headliners.
!!!, Broken Social Scene, Gogol Bordello, Minus the Bear, etc.

Seems that every year the line up gets more diverse. I went in 2004 and had a blast, but then it was mostly just hippie bands mixed with a few surprises. This coming year should be interesting. I wish I could be there next summer just to see the mighty Mastodon slay a bunch of crunchy hippies. That would be awesome. Looking over the rest of the line up, I must say they have a pretty good selection of bands. Too bad I'm in Oregon or I would think about getting some tix.

a picture! of Lez Zeppelin! They look like a great band! (warning: huge)

So AP never heard of Lez Zeppelin. Neither did I. There are plenty led zep cover bands, lordy.

I doubt Robert Plant joins in his old band cover band, wouldn't want to upstage the lead singer, :) , besides, he'll be promoting his work with Alison Krauss, which I love.

Seems Coachella has some duplication. Yeah, what the hell year Is it¿ Roger Waters performing Dark Side of the Moon, Portishead./ Kraftwerk./ ... talk about trying to cover all Ur bases. $$Grab.

The Sasquatch festival has the Cure and REM rumored to head the 2008 lineup. Last year, it was Arcade Fire and Bjork.

Also, I'm sort of surprised it's not all Radiohead all over the place, seeing as they're touring this summer.

Too tired out after that RED HAWT Super Bowl performance.

Plus...Metallica? What the hell?

Probably because of the enormous success of their St Anger laser light show. pfft...

That's an awesome lineup. I'd love to see M.I.A., Sigur Ros, Gogol Bordello, Ozomatli, Orchestra Baobab, and Vampire Weekend.

I saw Lez Zepplin in 2006 in the State Theatre in VA. The guitarist was fucking amazing, had the crowd eating out of her hand. It was a pretty good show, though some of the patrons were dicks.

I can't believe Metallica is playing. Well I can--I went to Bonnaroo last year, and for all it's "Hippie jam band feel good" reputation, it seemed mostly like drunk/stoned/somewhat angry fratboys. I went expecting "Peace, Love, Rock n' Roll" and came out with a slashed tire, someone trying to break my windshield with a stick/near fight, and the general impression that I was about three years late to the party.

Flaming Lips still kicked my ass, though.

shmegegge, a great band looks like this.

Lez Zepp actually rawcks. Their singer is their kinda-weak part (their former singer was a little more plant-like) but the rest of the band is massive. The bass player even plays some competent keyboards.

FWIW, the rumor that Led Zeppelin were going to reunite and headline Bonaroo was going around as early as mid-January (possibly much longer, but that's when I heard it). Dunno if it was maliciously started or merely someone's hopeful speculation.
