Possibly the cleanest Stanhope you will ever see. I recommend seeing this guy in a club. Totally worth it. (Though, I should say he's not for everyone.)

A nice companion to the post about Stewart Lee of a few days back (check out Stewart Lee's stand up on You Tube). Can you imagine those two guys in the same room?

What I love about Doug Stanhope is, he's just like all the funny-as-hell, witty, abrasive guys I worked with over the years, in kitchens, on boats, tattoo shops, wherever.
There's this whole sphere of guys like him that will happily tell you exactly what the deal is, and hand you your ass in any way you need it handed to you.
It's like some kind of semi-sloshed Green Lantern corps. When the Big One goes down, I am finding their battalion and never ever leaving.

Stanhope and Rogan are both tied to Sacred Cow Productions (or were in the past.
This was Hick's thing in Austin.
It's also where Alex Jones got his start.
Look for the video of him with Joe Rogan.
Jones is a comedian, pure and simple. The people who agree with him just don't get that part. Sadly, lately, Jones hasn't been getting that part either.

Right now, Stanhope is the only comedian who's shit I will stop what I'm doing to sit down and watch.

I feel like he's the closest thing to Bill Hicks that we've got these days
the guy who hosted one of the Girls Gone Wild vids, telling someone to "show him where babies feed?" the guy who took over The Man Show after even Kimmell and Carolla couldn't be bothered to deal with that shit any more?
let me watch this video, because I'm pretty obviously missing something about the guy.
...
that was pretty awesome. ok, mr stanhope, you have what you have long sought after: my approval.

I like Doug Stanhope, but he's wrong about the date rape part, statistically speaking. I wish he weren't. I don't know how much that detracts from his larger point -- probably not much -- but I didn't want to let that bit pass without comment.

Yeah, I know. Again, though, I think people tend to skip over Hick's "Randy Pan the Goat Boy" material when talking about him nowadays, because his sexual politics were pretty backwards comparatively (his attacking George Michael for acting gay has aged particularly poorly) and a lot of the Goat Boy stuff wasn't that funny.

There's a lot of rewards for blueish comics to go more blue. I see it a lot here in Portland, where Stanhope personally is a huge influence on comedians, but it's definitely market driven. A super blue show makes it a lot easier to set up your own gig for more money.
It's bugs me a bit because while Doug (and other similar comics) mean it when they talk about being "honest" and "real", a lot of them are nicer and less crass than their stage personas. But a really honest persona -- "blunt, often blue but fundamentally nice" -- wouldn't sell nearly as well as the crass alcoholic. Doug's a really good guy, very smart and has a big heart. He does like to piss people off a lot. He's been online for more than 10 years too, since alt.standup.comedy, and might well be reading this.

FYI, Doug: We put the napkin on top of drinks not to ward off roofies but to indicate to the bartender that we haven't left for good and not to dump our drink.

Love him. Also, how he manages all those hand gestures without knocking that martini over is beyond me.

It's cool that the beeb puts Stanhope out there as the voice of America, but sadly, the point of view he articulates in that clip is not widely shared by his fellow citizens.

to be fair, the whole "voice of america" aspect of this is pretty clearly not done seriously. there is even an asterisk next to it on the actual video that says something like "these views do not actually represent all americans."
