Breaking The Game For Fun And Profit

God damn it, I've resisted EO for YEARS AND YEARS and this article makes me want to play it like no other epic-space-war-intrigue-betrayal EO story ever has.

Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in.

Actually not quite, but it's a temptation. I have two accounts with a bunch of ships and credits.

No. No.

Not again...

I read this and am not entirely sure it's in English. None of those words meant anything to me. I'll stick with Solitaire on my phone.

I have no idea what any of it means, but I'm so intrigued by Eve. It's sort of like sports for me...I won't ever play it, I'm not interested in watching it, but I can read stories about it for hours.

This was interesting, thanks for posting.

Eve and Dwarf Fortress are in the category of games that I'd rather read about than try to figure out.

Exploration is terrible, and people shouldn't do it. (More specifically they shouldn't do it in the areas where I'm exploring.)

Eve is... complicated, I guess. I've played it on and off for years (when people say, "I won Eve" it's generally because they allowed their sub to lapse and uninstalled it) but it does have fun moments, and for every wrench that the bizarre Icelandic company running it throws to the playerbase, we can find a way to turn it to our advantage. Except for the patch that caused boot.ini to be deleted.

If you find Eve at all interesting, try the trial. They've made a new tutorial system that is said to be less confusing, and it's now on a stream-to-install client so there isn't even a particularly big download all at once. I'm not sure if there's still a MeFi corp (PINTO seems pretty quiet) but you don't really need a corp while in the trial anyway.
posted by the uncomplicated soups of my childhood at 2:10 PM on May 26, 2015

As the founder and current CEO of PINTO, the most recent MeFi corp: yes, we are dormant at the moment. If some enterprising mefites want to join up though, I would happily donate some EVE funds and time to getting them started, and would even turn over the reigns of PINTO to any sufficiently enterprising space cowperson.

Anyone interested in starting a new Metafilter incursion to New Eden should probably take it over to MetaTalk.

If I'm reading the article correctly, it seems that the one, weird trick is to just play the game for fun instead of trying to optimize every last stat in the faint hope of becoming a Master of the Universe or whatever.

At a certain point in my EVE career (I believe it was 2 months into the game), I had enough PLEX via newbie referral links to cover my subscription for 10 years

I'm calling bullshit on this.

Nuh uh. No way. Not coming near this. I have too many crippling addictions as it is.

"I'm calling bullshit on this."

It would be just 120 referrals. Easy to do if he really did have several tens of thousands of subscriptions to an entertaining Youtube account.
posted by Evilspork at 2:23 PM on May 26, 2015

Oh, and by "time" I meant that I would offer guidance, not that I was in a position to give away any substantial amount of subscription time. I'm not that space rich.

Don’t get me wrong—not everybody commands a preexisting, F-tier YouTube fanbase; not everyone has a wallet funded by the sheer optimism of thousands of new players. So it would make sense if you asked, “WINGSPAN, you can’t seriously think the average newbie can do anything like that?”

Yeah I just got to this part:

Don’t get me wrong—not everybody commands a preexisting, F-tier YouTube fanbase; not everyone has a wallet funded by the sheer optimism of thousands of new players.

Goes to show that RTFA is the truth

Oh, and it's worth your while to hit someone (including, but not limited to, me) up for a referral link if you are considering downloading the trial. You get a longer trial, and the person who refers you gets a big bonus that they will usually pass most or all of on to you to get you started.

I think I read this story before, but Cory Doctorow wrote it twelve years ago.

Seriously though, this reads like a short story you'd find in Interzone in the early 2000s. Right down to the spot-on game patter.

Eve and Dwarf Fortress are in the category of games that I'd rather read about than try to figure out.

In that vein, an acquaintance of mine is doing about the history of EVE. Not the history of the game's creation. The history of the wars in the game. An update he posted today to the kickstarter for it said they're very near to finishing the ebook version (though printed books will be a fall release because of how long it takes to make them).

You can watch a short talk he gave presenting some of said history here to get a feel of the kind of thing he's doing (though note that was given at an annual convention for EVE fans, so it's pitched a bit more towards that crowd than the book will be).

I can't quite tell from the article or the "ads" for their "services" whether WINGSPAN Delivery Services are assassins-for-hire or just a cheeky way of saying, "We're a guild that just flies around blowing things up."

It's the latter.

Don't trust 256! He's a filthy space pirate.

I, however, am 100% trustworthy and will pass along all of the referral bonus back to you!

The two week trial is worth it just for messing around with the character creator.

CCP made a really good EVE trailer, you should watch it.

The voice comms are from real players (some who I recognize). The graphics are from the game engine, but were probably not recorded with the comms. What I mean is that the game does look like that, but usually in fights you keep it zoomed way out for better tactical awareness (just like it would be hard to play Starcraft from a closeup first-person perspective). Still, it's pretty neat and gives a sense of why people get sucked into the game.

I love that in that video when the music comes up to a triumphant swell, how it shows screenshots of like, probing and planetary interaction, and the in game map.

Still a good video though.

I know, right? Should have shown dotlan and zkillboard screenshots instead.

Or the ship spinning counter. That was a major feature.

If you cannot resist the siren song of Eve Online, drop me a line in game (Dunk Dinkle) and I'll get you started out with some cash and advice.

Of course, I'll invite you to join Brave Newbies so you can play for the good guys and win!
