Veteran actor George Coe has died at the age of 86. His final role of note was as the voice of Woodhouse on "Archer" so the producers made a little tribute. Still, he did a lot before that.
In 1968, he co-directed and co-starred in a short Ingmar Bergman satire that was Madeline Kahn's acting debut: "De Düva: The Dove". It was nominated for an Oscar as Best Short Subject.
He was one of the original 'Not Ready for Prime Time Players' on Saturday Night Live, hired to provide 'an older face' (he was 46) and in spite of having been on Prime Time TV a few times before. But he was dropped after only a few episodes in which he mostly played a 'commercial announcer who wasn't Don Pardo'.
He appeared in secondary roles in movies including "The Stepford Wives" , "Kramer Vs. Kramer", "Bustin' Loose", and "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins" and dozens of TV shows including a recurring role as a judge on "L.A. Law" (one of over 20 recurring judges), an alien diplomat on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and (probably his most notable pre-Archer role) an opening-credited regular as the Not-Evil Network Executive on "Max Headroom".

Oh, this guy. I loved this guy. Great sideburns, amazing career. He acted from his early middle age on without a break. Imagine what his life pre-40's was like? RIP, George.

(Woodhouse was oddly absent from Archer last season, as even where there was no reason for him to appear on a storyline, there were always some flashbacks to Archer being a dick to Woodhouse. I kinda hoped it would be just a matter of budgeting or scheduling, but Coe might have been sick or simply age caught up with him to keep working.)

The obit I saw said "long illness," so presumably he was unavailable for the last season.

His voice seemed to have changed in the later seasons he was in (see 2:06 in the tribute video). Wonder if that was related to his illness or a replacement altogether...

Also I just read, well, skimmed, Donna McKechnie's autobiography. She mentioned dating him (maybe 25-plus years ago?), and he'd fought a serious battle with cancer back then.

I wonder how they're going to handle the character Woodhouse in Archer. Is he also going to die? Become the best cyborg ever? Have his tongue ripped out and made mute by a rabid lemur, and he can't go to hospital because he's 'tripping balls'?
