that was hilarious.
I had to stop not to snort the green beans I was eating.

Poor Donna. I'm not quite as clever as this guy but I've certainly annoyed the shit out of my wife with similar retail store silliness.

It's a shame he didn't walk by the KÖRREKT ÄSPEKT RÄTIO or the DÅN'T HOLLD YÖUR FÖNN LYKKEN IDDYOT. I realize it was probably the best way to frame the shot but, save for a few portrait monitors, the entire universe is set up to watch videos horizontally and it's pretty jarring to watch thing that way.

When Swedish people go to Ikea, I wonder what language they think the product names are in?

They filmed my wife and me on a trip to IKEA and used some accent changer on me and face changer on her. I'm not sure how they did it, but it's a bit of an intrusion.

I showed her this and she was even less amused than when I do it, but I think it's secretly why she hangs around. I'll keep telling myself this while I shout Flärdfull! and MALM! at her at full volume.

My husband is Swedish. I am Dutch. Back when we still lived in Holland he got a kick out of asking the poor employees in the Dutch Ikea directions to the BREDSKÄR (or whatever) - in perfectly pronounced Swedish. As it happens, Ikea employees in Holland do not, as a rule, understand actual Swedish. You can guess how well that went.

I think I reacted to my husband's shenanigans in much the same way Dana did in this video.

Me and wife driving in car.

I notice license plate of car in front of us: 588 OCKS

Me: Wow. That's a lot of ocks.

Silence....

Me: whole lot of --

Her: Yes, I get it.

The puns don't work if you pronounce the words properly, but I guess that's part of the joke.

i don't imagine that IKEA started the trend, but it is really common in Sweden to give names to stuff. All of Ericsson's mobile phones used to have names like Dolly-Sandra (for the north american DAMPS standard), Nina-Sandra for the old analog NMT phones, etc. The conference rooms at Ericsson in Kista were named after painters, etc.

This is going to replace "how to pronounce gif" as Metafilter's perennially-argued-never-resolved topic of choice, isn't it?

Would have been so much better had he not been "Hey, Donna! Donna! Hey, Donna! Hey, Donna, time for fünnåy! Hey, Donna..."

Yeah. In a retail setting I totally do what this guy does. Also, if we're in the kitchenware section of a store I will instinctively pick up two pairs of tongs and pretend to be a lobster.

It's just the way things are.

Meanwhile I go to IKEA and I'm so happy not to be in a monoglot society for a few hours. Of course I also don't get what's so funny about unlaut and no, you cannot just insert ø as a good rad sub for o - it's a different letter all together.

Yeah, this is probably not aimed at expat Scandinavians, I'm guessing, but these jokes that stem from living in a monoglot world are just not funny.

Oh, it's resolved. The people who insist on taking vertical videos don't seem to have gotten the message, though. Unless the composition of your scene specifically lends itself to a vertical aspect ratio (like say, a giraffe wearing a top hat walking down a narrow alley while carrying a baguette), turn yer damn phone around.

We have this wooden kitchen step-stool from Ikea called "Bekväm." We've had it for years.
Right from the beginning, we called it Bekväm and we still do to this day.
It's never, "hey, can you grab the stool I need to get this can of peaches from the top shelf;" it's always "I can't reach this, can you bring the Bekväm over?"
"Who left the Bekväm in front of the cupboard?"
"Just use the Bekväm."
"Hey dad, where's the Bekväm?"
It's the only Ikea thing in our house that we call by name and I have no idea why.

It's part of the jøke! It løøks funny to us nøn-Scandinavians.

(Also, I think Monty Python bears a lot of respønsibility for making these things seem funny to us.)

My partner and I walk around Ikea doing this to each other. Also every day is poop jokes and snickering at farting, and every trip to Dick's Sporting Goods turns into an endless string of this:

"I require something from the big Dick's."
"You're saying only the big Dick's can satisfy you?"
"Yeah, but I hate going to the mall because you have to beat off so many people just to get to the big Dick's."

Marry somebody who gets you, is all I'm saying.

There is a whole lot of "Donna" going on in this thread for a video of someone saying "Dana" 80 times.

I always thought 'Dana' was pronounced 'Dāna', at least in North America--is that not the case?
posted by sandettie light vessel automatic at 3:26 PM on August 24, 2015 [1 favorite]

I heard it as Donna initially. Now I think I hear it as Danna, but probably only because the Dana cabal implanted that notion into my head.

A little further into the video it dawned on me why I'm single.

Oooh, that was very close to how a recent dash to IKEA with the wife turned out to be. Except for one crucial difference: I don't shoot video vertically.

Actually no wait, I don't shoot video at all during pun-runs. It's very important to pay attention to the task at hand.

I, er, generally keep a lid on this sort of thing in polite society

So several years ago we went for a fancy-pants buffet brunch for my mom's birthday. I took a trip to the buffet and snagged a couple of half lobsters. The kind that have been cut down the middle from nose to tail.

I decided that they, facing her with their good (non-guts) side should perform a little birthday celebration. So I made them dance on the table, claws swinging wildly, singing "Happy Birthday," with a little jazz swing feel. The singing was an elevated screechy falsetto. I'm a terrible singer, but I can do cartoonish obnoxious falsetto ok.

Some uptight people at nearby tables looked over, annoyed.

My family was in tears with laughter.

So I guess what I'm saying is that if you have to mope through buying household goods all sad, then fuck polite society.

Then again, I'm the guy who, in the bedding department, will flop on a bed and shout out "Hey baby, let's test drive this one!"

So my speciality is bilingual puns that only people pretty conversant in both languages will get, with a fallback to homophones in the language where people don't really do homophones (they're all about characters that look similar).

My son and my girlfriend are united in their disgust ...
posted by oheso at 6:28 AM on August 25, 2015

Yeah, this is probably not aimed at expat Scandinavians,

Yep, I doubt it too. If you understand the language then it doesn't really work. For example, all those Hitler-ranting-in-the-bunker YouTube parodies, undoubtedly roaringly funny to those who don't speak German, fall flat when you can hear exactly what is being said and there are just some random, unrelated English subtitles on the screen. I'd like to have found it funny though.

Also, I’m pretty sure every Ikea product name actually means something in Swedish (according to my Dutch friend, who was highly amused by the translations his Swedish wife was giving him as they navigated the store). So for more Ikea store amusement, whip out your real-time image google translate app...

"Good luck tiny pony" killed me.

My wife does this with road signs when we're driving.

[GRENFELL 16]
"Poor Gren, you'd think he's learn after the first 15 falls."

[SEVEN PERSONS 35]
"When someone dies they force a stranger to move into town. THERE MUST BE SEVEN"

[CARMANGAY 25]
"Yes, that is true. She is."

Filming her when she's drugged and just recovered from surgery falls more on the creepy side of things than on the funny side of things

idk, on his channel he also has a video of himself coming out of surgery and saying silly things so it didn't seem particularly creepy to me.
