Reflection's Edge, a monthly fiction zine (back issues), has many resources for writers, including slang/dialect (don't miss the links to Texas Talk, the Internet Guide to Jazz Age Slang, or the 1736 Canting Dictionary), writing advice and interviews, and advice on how to sell your story.
Thanks, Pants! This leaves me all cock-a-whoop! Lots of good stuff in here.

heh. Several of those Texas Talk words are in my regular working vocabulary (gullywasher, cattywumpus, wore out), and it's worth reading just for the similes. Fun links, thanks.

Yeah, the Texas Talk is really more appropriately called "Southeastern Slang", with the exception of a few items. Most of these can be heard from Texas to Virginia.

But, but Texas exceptionalism! Davy Crockett! The Alamo!

I expected the Texas Talk to be ridiculously over-exaggerated, but most of it turns out to be everything heard in phone calls home. That being said I really thought 'hissy-fit' was universal.
