AssaultCube is a free first-person-shooter. Set in a realistic looking environment, it's fast and arcade-like. Available for Windows, OS X, and Linux (via)

The mac version is bigger due to the lick-able sugar coating and post-update snappiness.

Oh hell yes. Cube and its successor Sauerbraten are incredible.

I spent a full month last fall building a level in Sauerbraten...if you are trying to get into level design, their built in tools are fairly easy to use.

You can go directly into edit mode from gameplay mode, and when in edit mode you can fly around moving walls, lights, teleporters, pickups etc, then back to the game...it's pretty wild!

It would be great if the editing were somehow integrated into game play, but I guess that could get crazy.

Thanks...I've been looking for a replacement for Counter-Strike and this looks like it will do

If you like AssaultCube and Sauerbraten, you may also want to try Urban Terror.

"...AssaultCube is fast and runs on old hardware, with the correct settings you can run it on a P3 800Mhz gf2."

Sweet a game I can actually play. I've been wanting to get the orange box and play on the metafilter server for a while but I guess this will have to do.

Wow, I still really suck at shooty games. Thanks!

Thanks, I sometimes want to play a few rounds of a game like this online but lack the desire to actually go out and purchase one.

If this is a plug-your-favorite-free-online-cross-platform-fps thread then I'm going to mention Tremulous. I'm sure its been mentioned here before, and it's not a counter-strike clone (rather, think small scale FPS co-op Starcraft) but its so awesome I can't help myself. But if you must have actual guns in your virtual shootout then you should also try True Combat. Of all the free CS clones, I find it the best, having the most realistic movement and shooting, i.e., you can't run 20mph and jump 10 ft in the air.

So I'm in the game and, like, where are the instructions?

I've just been periodically going back to the wiki, Faze.

There's a readme and a documentation folder... but real men (and wimmens) ignore those, of course.

Regrettably, my video game abilities seem to have never progressed passed the "run to the right and jump over the hole" stage.

Heh. Funny how Cpunterstrike now represents "The Man".

Wow, this is cool!

It became even cooler once I learned to invert the mouse: /invmouse 1

Doesn't seem to be too many servers yet, but if someone here decides to set one up, count me in! :)

Ditto, I'm tired of being killed by strangers.

In other free FPS fun, Jay is Games recently posted a brief feature on Avert Fate, which I haven't had a chance to play yet but looks pretty cool.

Ah! No, I haven't. I'm pretty new to gaming, really. I'm still obsessed with Touhou and Yume Nikki.

Thanks!

K, I just played for ten minutes and got killed a lot but it was fun.

So if anyone is planning on doing a mefi frag-down, let me know!

Damn, I can run single player just fine, but when I connect to a multiplayer server, my PC eventually freezes up something fierce. Sometimes sooner, sometimes later, but I usually have to just pull the plug on the whole thing. Damn.

ouch. on ubuntu there's no sound, and hitting the 'quit' menu option froze up my whole computer. I was able to kill it by logging in from another computer but it didn't leave 640x480 mode.
