Programming Language or Pokemon?

See how many you get right out of 10 questions.

If you use the following, that's cheating!

--

cheat #1: list of all programming languages

cheat #2: names of all Pokemon

Tempting, isn't it?

9/10, but I have no idea which one I missed, really.

Now off to invent a language I think I'll call "Torchic."

Yes, there should be a results page.

10 out of 10.

Having done the Hello World quiz helped.

They should do more NoSQL DBs - Hadoop would be a really cute Pokemon.

10/10 without cheating. Now, my Erlang module is done, so it's time to get back to Lumiose City.

Played twice, 9/10 both times, would definitely program in Igglybuff if it were possible to do so.

It's true that you'd only need to be an expert in one of these areas to ace the test.

9/10
10/10
10/10
10/10

I am unreasonably good at this and I didn't actually recognize any of the pokemon and I'm only barely familiar with the existence of maybe half the programming languages it shows...

Did anyone outside of the University of Toronto and a few captive high schools ever program in Turing for real?

9/10, and I agree with others -- not having a results page on something like this is evil.

10/10, and I actually only recognized about three of the items shown. The types of names just aren't actually that similar.

Use the source, dudes. Use the source. All shall be revealed.

Also: PIKACHU!

Programming languages are shorter and don't have lots of consonants together. "Ruby" is a programming language, "Prublin" sounds like a Pokemon. Which is odd because isn't that exactly what Japanese doesn't do?

Pokemon sound like you've stuck two words for animals together and mangled them a bit. Programming languages either sound completely artificial, or are just a real word, or are one or three letters. If it's actually an animal, it's a programming language.

Pah, anything past the original 151 doesn't count as a Pokemon*, so this should be called 'Programming language or money spinning Pokemon like species'. I guess that's not so pithy, but still.

*does this make me a pokemon hipster?

7/10
8/10
10/10

The less I think about it, the better my score. Coincidence? (I know literally nothing about Pokemon beyond that the word describes a group of things, not merely one thing and there was a tv show kids used to like, maybe?)

10/10, never played Pokemon in my life, but guess what I do for a living.

Huh, there are programming languages called "Dog" and "Pizza." Those would be interesting Pokemon in a battle.

I have seen dog fight pizza and it is indeed fascinating to behold, especially when the cheese is still hot but they cannot resist.

Precious few Pokémon don't get brand new names for overseas purposes, for what's worth.

And my lack of knowledge about programming is only eclipsed by my lack of knowledge about Pokemon.

You have to admit that "Boo" is totally plausible as both a programming language and a Pokemon.

Every Pokemon deserves a language named after it. Or at least an algorithm of some sort.

Someone should take all the programming language names and sketch what kind of Pokemon they sound like.

Well, there's different degrees, isn't there? Pokemon might be up to six or seven generations now over four portable platforms, with each generation consisting of at least two similar-but-different games, but they don't charge you cash money for collecting monsters. Unlike, say, Magic: The Gathering.
posted by JHarris at 6:01 PM on October 26, 2013

It has a collectible card game incarnation.

I worked at a place where they code named a software project after a Pokemon. When it came time to actually pick a marketing name, they came up with some "real" name candidates and after an intensive round of research and focus groups, they found that the name most popular with the market was...the original code name. So that's what they went with. Eventually they changed the name after a trademark dispute, not from Nintendo, but from *another* software company that also had a product with that same Pokemon's name.

Well, don't leave us hanging. What was the project name?
posted by ymgve at 6:48 PM on October 26, 2013

Oh, well, I didn't want it to be too identifiable on Google but it looks like there are quite a few software packages out there with the same name: Abra
posted by phoenixy at 6:58 PM on October 26, 2013 [1 favorite]

That's a nice name. It'd be funnier though if the name was Ditto.

It is not being used inappropriately, so nobody cares.

EVERY commercial video game is a money making operation. You don't have to like the new pokemon games obviously, but the second generation of games didn't cross some sacred line. They were just a sequel expanding on a successful franchise. (Besides thinking that way shuts people out of what could be a fun time)

Yeah, fair enough, though I suppose almost every product can be classed as a money spinning operation. I think what bothers me is that I feel nostalgic about the original Pokemon series though none after, so I instinctively dislike them. Obviously I that's not a reason to base an opinion on, but that's why I feel like the only purpose of the later seasons is making cash for Satoshi Tajiri.

10 PRINT "ENTER YOUR FAVORITE POKEMON'S NAME HERE AND IT WILL TALK TO YOU!";
20 INPUT $A;
30 PRINT "OH BOY! HERE HE IS!";
40 PRINT $A;
50 GOTO 40;

Muk around with both at the same time. Gotta catch all the exceptions! Program in Pico-chu!

It's like Professor Oak used to say, "Pokémon around the [hello,] world wait for you, Ash."

As the father of a 7-year old, let me assure you that I have no idea what the hell you're talking about and all 7,000 extant Pokemon are legitimate and proper.
