lobster sticks to magnet, a
brand new meme is born

Things I learned:

- Lobsters are made of meat
- Rabbits are, apparently, made of metal

Eep.

Riiight... that was an incredible waste of life.

Oh come on...its not about quality...its about community.

If people start believing its funny, then it is. It'll build and build, and just like AYBABTU it'll be the funniest thing in the world when you see it for the 15th time.

AYBABTU

what does this acronym mean?

It's interesting how memes that don't try like Mahir and AYBABTU succeed, while engineered attempts at creating memes don't. The cool thing about AYBABTU is that it was a kind of happy accident. Something unexpected. "Lobster Sticks to Magnet" is just a copycat idea. It fails the "unexpectedly original" and "un-self-conscious" tests.

But, the ending, people, the ending! Note the triumph of the iceberg! A lesson for us all?

Magnetic lobster.
Power chords and hoarse yelling.
Titanic ending!

If that's the next AYBABTU, then I fear that we have reached the end of civilization. This was one of the most stupid things I have thing in a long time and, not being a big fan of heavy metal music, I really want to minute I spent on it back.....

Lobster Sticks to Magnet is way older than All Your Base Are Belong to Us.

Presentation and effort goes to All Your Base, but Lobster has the better music.

If MTV played stuff like that, I'd consider getting cable...and maybe even a TV.

The worst thing about it? We're going out for Thai tonight, and now all I want is a big, honkin' red, magnetic, lobster. And butter. And a martini.Schlomo, I'm heading over to CafePress... :)

"Lobster Sticks to Magnet" is just a copycat idea.

Actually no. This is a bit of bizarre weirdness that was living happily on its own long before the all-your-base thing got turned into a pop culture icon.

I don't get it, personally, but this is the third time someone has pointed it out to me or a group I frequent, so obviously it has SOME appeal...

Stop trying to read so much into this just because of the All Your Base backlash. This has been around for a long time.

As for the "trying too hard" comment, the problem is that the link goes directly to the movie. Back out to

http://www.512productions.com/

and read their own caption re: for this to be funny.

It reminded me, oddly enough, of Monkey Vs. Robot. Not for the content, but for the... erm... 'style'.

But I prefer 'Monkey'.

I've watched it about 40 times in the last 4 months. I like best when the lobster bites your eye. AYB is second-rate at best.

My son loves it. He's 8.

The followup ad asks, "Does your company have it's own flash ad?"

Why are media companies unable to use the possessive form of 'it?' Am I the only one who notices this? It's (that's the contraction for 'it has' or 'it is') been used several times in MeFi posts this week. Curse all you want, kids, but use the Standard English. P133z!

OK, it probably says something (I'm not sure what, exactly) that I saw this post and read the headline as "Lobster sticks to megnut." At which point I decided to get up, step outside and look up at the sky for a while.

Have you all seen this, with the translation here, it is exponentially funnier, though I found lobster amusing in a Stone & Parker way.
posted by fiery at 12:52 AM on March 9, 2001

Lobster's wackiness is just too "polished" for my tastes. I prefer my inanity with sort of a rough-edged, slapdash look to it. :-)

Speaking of which: set your MeFi dials back to here for a blast-from-the-past recap of the most enjoyable "hatten" video that fiery mentions.
