Grantland writers put in their two cents on the all-time great drinking scenes in TV and movies (Available on Youtube Edition).

Conversation has already begun on Grantland writer Jonah Keri's Twitter feed about unacceptable oversights. For example:

Tombestone
Swingers
And a whole subgenre of scenes between Bunk and McNulty.

How can you possibly make a list like this scene from Jaws?

This list cannot be "all-time," because it lacks the club scene from Teacher's Pet. No actor now living can do a desperate, sweating stupor like Clark Gable.

There was a great drinking montage in Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels as well.

In all my years of barhopping in New York, how come I never met a single Marion Ravenwood?

Because they're out hunting rare treasures in the field, duh!

Eh, they're missing Jackie Chan in Drunken Master. I mean, it's got "Drunken" right in the title.

A youtube search for (Dolohov drinks an entire bottle of rum) does not pull the clip. It's in episode number one (or possibly two) of War and Peace 1972 mini-series. He does it in one horrifying long gulp.

Don't ever get in a drinking contest with a Russian.

Perhaps the drinking scene from Das Boot has passed under their sonar, yes?

120 minutes of Barfly. Yes I am aware that it's only 90 minutes long. Whats it to ya?

Father Mulcahy gets drunk and gives temperance speech to camp at request of Frank Burns ftw. "Let me quote....Leviticus 10"

Was hoping to see one of my favorite kung fu scenes of all time. Clicked. Was not disappointed.

My choices from the world of TV
1. M*A*S*H: Henry Blake's farewell party
2. WKRP: On-air drunk driving test
3. Andy Griffith Show: Barney gets into some hard cider

Honorable mention to Barney Miller and the Brownie Episode for a different kind of intoxication.

There has never been a better portrayal of a drunk in cinema than Susan Tyrrell's performance in Fat City. There probably never will be.

If they did this for smoking, half of the clips would include Helen Mirren. Have you seen that woman hold a cigarette? She does more lighting up and casually coating her lungs with tar in a single scene than most actors do in an entire film.

Never thought of it but Fat City would make a great double bill with Barfly. You'd need Tylenol and a hot shower afterwards though.

Withnail & I

the absence of which on the Grantland list has me wondering why I would ever bother visiting that site. Like posting a list of the greatest home run hitters of all time and omitting Babe Ruth.

(Though, in my mind, like Monty Python, it remains glorious regardless.)

Withnail and I, yeah.

My favorite would be the scene in Life Is Sweet where Stephen Rea and Jim Broadbent get snockered at the pub while trying to remember the lineup of the 1960-61 double-winning Tottenham Hotspur side. And Timothy Spall getting so drunk in another scene that he smashes up his restaurant and passes out in a chip van. I mean, come ON.

It's minor by comparison, but I love the party scene at the beginning of Hitchcock's Notorious in which Ingrid Bergman delivers the line "Don't be silly. The important drinking hasn't started yet."
