Can you recognise all of the forty different anime in this video without looking at the crib sheet?

I can't name a single one. But that's not really the point of this video, which is very impressive and neat to watch. The audio is fantastic.

Uhhh.... 1/40 Gurren Lagann?

(I haven't watched any anime since 2007 clearly)

I do kind of want to watch some of these anime where kids are having fun and dancing. My main memory of anime was basically every show ends with a 40-foot tower of pulsating horror flesh screaming "WHY DOESN'T ANYONE UNDERSTAND MY FEELINGS?!?!"

Hey man, don't knock Akira

Crib sheet is missing Interstella 5555 at 33 seconds, unless Daft Punk shows up in anime form elsewhere.

I recognized Durarara!!, K-on!, Kill La Kill, Kyoukai no Kanata, Mawaru Penguindrum, Mikakunin de Shinkoukei, Gurren Lagann, and Witch Craft Works.

Had to go back and check regarding Guilty Crown since the cribsheet listed it - it was a totally blink and you miss it appearance.

Mister Cheese, the cribsheet does list Interstella 5555 as one of the anime clips during 0:29 - 0:34 seconds sequence.

How is iDOLM@STER? I just watched Love Live and K-On and now I need something to fill a music-anime-shaped hole.

Coincidently I just watched the first episode of the 2011 series, which was rather neat, done in a mockumentary fashion to introduce the characters. Looks good so far.

I recognized Space Dandy mostly just from the distinctive art style.

Have you seen Hibike! Euphonium? It has more of a plot and drama than slice-of-life shows like K-On!, but still plenty of music, girls (and boys! for once) playing said music, and excellent directing and animation.

You might also want to give Tari Tari a try - it's a about a group of high school students (girls and boys!) in the choir club trying to put together a performance during the last summer before they graduate from high school.

"it's a about a group of high school students"

You're kidding!

Gurren Lagan, Kill la Kill and..... The dude with the 'fro is from Panty and Stocking, right? Very well done, but clearly not my taste in anime.

...now I have "anime panty and stocking" in my Google history, GREAT. Someday I'll have DuckDuckGo in muscle memory.

Proud to say I only recognize one and that's TTGL, the only anime anyone needs.

With all the guitar playing in the video, why nothing from 'FLCL', where a guitar was very prominent (and used as a weapon)?

Also, yes Garterbelt was very recognizable from 'Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt'... partly because he was the only black person in the video...

And Evil Student Council President from 'Kill La Kill' was the best lip-synced character.

Not sure if that reflects all that well on the video or Anime in general. Or if my noticing these things reflects well on me.

What was the oldest show included here? FLCL is 15 years old, it may not have even been on the radar of the creators.

Related.

My notes:
Penguindrum (we're just a rock and roll band.......)
Yuyushiki
Nichijou
K-on
Nisekoi
K-on again
The Eccentric Family (oh god, I loved this anime so much)
Witchcraft Works
Durara?
Kill la Kill
dammit, the pseudo AKB one note: turned out to be Wake Up, Girls!. why did I watch that again?
more K-on
more Nichijou
animation style looks like Panty & Garter, but I don't remember any of that show, so...?
FLCL
Chuunibyou
the weirdly random episode of kyoukai no kanata with the stink monster, so good
Magi
more Kill la Kill
so much K-on and Nichijou
Jojo? doesn't seem angular enough...
Yes, definitely Durara
Haruhi
So 16?...not bad! Helps that they were almost all recent shows and kind of my type.

anime where kids are having fun and dancing yt

Oh god the best part is the training montage. And also this picture.

Blech, what is there to discuss? I'm just waiting for January.

I think maybe the oldest show is Interstella5555, from 2003, Gurren Lagann is from 2007 and most are more recent than that.

Maryr: What did you think was FLCL? It's not in the crib sheet, and it's one series I've re-watched enough times I'd expect to recognize it.
posted by RobotHero at 9:43 AM on October 12, 2015

The pile of TVs, I think? Oh, also the Gurren Lagann kid, I haven't watched that (not a big mecha fan, generally) because apparently I forgot the FLCL kid's outfit.
posted by maryr at 9:49 AM on October 12, 2015

The pile of TVs was from Guilty Crown.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, my bad. Also I miscounted without that one, I think I got 14. Don't care, still a dork. (The thing I thought was Chuunibyou.. was also Guilty Crown, it turns out, but that was still in the credits. So, huh.)

Thanks for the suggestions upthread! I know fuck-all about anime so I didn't even know where to start. :-) Tari Tari is great so far and I'm gonna try Hibike Euphonium next.
posted by danb at 8:44 PM on October 12, 2015

Update for posterity: Hibike Euphonium was fantastic, Tari Tari was great, Idolmaster is meh three episodes in.

So glad to hear other people like Hibike Euphonium too -- one of my favourite anime of all time, especially that scene with Reina and Kumiko at the festival.
