Do Not Try This

Casual drinker Emmett Farnan finishes the first documented beer half marathon. Farnan competed in The Holy Half Marathon in Half Bend, Indiana, shotgunning a beer at every mile marker. That is 13 beers drank while running over 13 miles, and he managed it all in 1:43.

All that staggering probably made him run a lot further than a half marathon.

I wonder if its related to Hash House Harriers, the drinking club with a running problem.

I stand to salute him! Then I grab my stomach, and groan, and rush off to the bathroom!

The The Marathon du Medoc is the same, but with wine.

I know a few folks who do this sort of thing, and they set a lower limit of 5% ABV on the beer. Coors Light wouldn't qualify. Quite a feat nonetheless.

That's nothing. I can drink 13 beers without moving at all.

He would have made better time if he drove the 13 miles while shotgunning 13 beers.

I seem to remember reading a site years ago about someone doing this on an Oakland, CA marathon, and getting lost in the process.

I used to be an avid long distance runner and an excellent binge drinker, and I always said that if I saw one of these rumored "beer stations" during a race, by god, I would stop and drink a beer.

My opportunity arrived at mile 20 of the Dallas White Rock Marathon (2010?) at the bottom of a very large hill. I stopped and drank half a beer, then I set out to run up the hill.

The rest of that race went poorly for a lot of reasons, but I think the beer takes some of the blame. I got really sick.

I guess the moral of the story is: like they say, never do anything new on race day. Train for that shit.
