International Orangutan Awareness Week. Won't somebody please think of the orangutans?

At the Henry Vilas zoo in Madison, WI I used to visit the orangutans on a more-than-weekly basis.

As I continued to visit them, the baby would start coming up to me and playing patty-cake against the glass - when I put my hand there, it'd put its hand there, and the adult male would plop himself down directly in front of me and point.

When the baby was younger, the mother would actually come up to me and hold it in front of me - a lot like a human mother - "look how big he's getting!"

Of course you all know that one of the largest great ape facilities in North America is located right here in Iowa?
